We Remember

HIKICHI, Daniel

It is with great sadness we share with you the tragic, accidental passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Daniel Hikichi on June 29, 2016. Dan will be deeply missed by his soulmate and wife of 34 years, Donna, and their children Kaelee (Nic) Moretto, Riley (Katlyn), Braeden, Carter, and grandson Lucca.  Baby brother to Barry (Sharon) Hikichi of Kelowna, and Grace (Dave) Weber of Surrey.  Along with a large extended family of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, friends, coworkers, and his favourite cat, Kita.  Born to parents Shoichi and Teru Hikichi on July 27, 1955 in Kelowna, Dan was raised in Winfield on the family orchard where he absorbed and evolved into his own spirit of hard work, perseverance, dedication, generosity, kindness, and selflessness with a handful of mischievousness for good measure.

Dan went on to BCIT where he received his Diploma in Mining Technology (1976) and in 1977 his Diploma in Civil and Construction Technology from Okanagan College. Co-owner of Interior Testing Services of Kelowna, he continued to display his art of hard work, perseverance, and dedication with a little mischievousness as he worked up and down the Okanagan Valley.

But Dan was a devoted, fun loving, proud, and gentle family man first, working hard to make sure his family could reach their dreams, striving to provide the best for his family that often spilled over to include his extended family and friends, and on many occasions to strangers who just needed a gift of friendship or a hand up. He oozed confidence from his tough exterior and bled kindness from his heart.  His endless time spent with family through various sports, activities, and Friday night dinners proved his love for the ones closest to him.  Always ready to coach from the sidelines, whether it be school, work, sports, or life.  Countless hockey practices, hockey games, road trips, equipment purchases, dance practices, and recitals.  He loved hockey and always had some “words of wisdom” or proud stories to share.

He was a quiet and shy man to many. In large groups you would often find Dan teasing and joking with the younger generation (The Dan Hikichi handshake), or playing with children.  He was a man who gave 110% every day.  Never a challenge too big or a job too small.  Dan got it done.  That’s what he did.

Dan never took the last of anything, he left it for you.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the 911 dispatcher, first responders and paramedics, emergency room and operating room staff for their quick attention and excellent care.  Special thanks to Dr. P. Govender and Dr. J. Chayka – the dream team.  Thank you to the many dedicated and professional staff in the ICU, and most importantly, thank you to our special friend Brenda Goodman, and the many family, friends, and coworkers who visited, supported, hugged, and prayed for Dan and his family.

In lieu of flowers or Koden, memorial donations may be made to the Kelowna Salvation Army, Kelowna Gospel Mission, to a charity of choice, or as Dan may have done, “Pay it Forward”.

Friendship is one of the most cherished gifts in life and none are greater then Dans. We had so much fun through our school years and beyond. Countless weekend road trips, working on our cars and always a big highlight for Gerry and I was lunch at Hikichi’s. One of the hardest things we face in life is saying goodbye to the ones we love. Thankfully we all have so many wonderful memories of our time with Dan. Out heart goes out to Dans family and all that loved him and miss him. Lee & Lynda Reeve

  • Rob Tamaki (Queenie, Matthew, Brianne) says:

    Donna and family,

I remember fondly my childhood years, where my family would go visit Aunt Terry and Uncle Sho, where we would enjoy the pickled daikon radish and the sliced meats snacks. But mostly, it was always fun to engage with Dan. Forever the joker, and always good for a noogie or two, his free spirit and love for life was infectious. I know that he carried that through his adulthood, and the few times that I did meet up with him again in the past several years, those same qualities still shone through. May your memories of his life stir you to persevere and love life even more.

    Blessings and Prayers,

    Rob

  • Michelle, David, Zachary and Kelsey Perehudoff says:

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Dan. The few times we met it was obvious how incredibly proud he was of his family, with every reason to be. It was a pleasure to share our home with Riley. Our thoughts are with you Donna, Riley, and family.

  • Roger G Lee says:

Studied beside him at Okanagan College. Shovelled beside him on the Powder Crew with Yogi and Erik at Brenda Mines stemming the blast holes. Went to BCIT and solved many problems together, He had the better car. I went to the Yukon and he went back to the orchards he loved and hated. When you see the tailing dam from the new highway , know that a fraction of that material was from both our efforts from time spent on holiday and summer work
