We Remember

ADAMACK, Helen Anna

February 4, 1924 — March 14, 2017

It is with lingering sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother Helen Adamack (nee Hatlelid) at the age of 93. Helen passed away peacefully in her sleep at Mountainview Village in Kelowna on March 14, 2017. Helen is predeceased by her husband Nicholas Adamack, her son William (Bill) Adamack and her brothers Richard (Dick) Hatlelid and Clifford Hatlelid.  Helen is survived by her sons Tom (Carol) Adamack, Dick (Monica) Adamack, Grandchildren Aaron Adamack, Denene (Adam) Hough, Nick Adamack and Ben Adamack and great grandchildren Owain and Christopher Hough as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, in laws and extended family.

Helen was born in LaFleche Saskatchewan on Feb 4, 1924. After growing up on the Hatlelid farm, Helen ventured into teaching having completed her Normal teaching college and University of Saskatoon requirements.  Helen’s early teaching assignments were in one room schoolhouses in Lynthorpe, Lakenheath, Scout Lake and Vantage where she was often only a year or two older than some of her students.

Helen met Nicholas Adamack while she was teaching in Lakenheath and they were married in October, 1947. They farmed and raised their three sons on the Adamack homestead near Lakenheath.  In 1969, they developed a new farmstead next to Assiniboia. Helen returned to teaching in the early 1960’s at Limerick School, later becoming the principal.  She then attended the University of Saskatchewan to complete her degree where she was awarded as both “the most distinguished graduate” and as the recipient of the very first President’s medal from the university.  After graduation Helen taught sciences and math at Assiniboia High School until her retirement.

Helen and Nick divided their time between their Assiniboia farm and a home in Phoenix once they retired. After Nick’s passing, Helen continued to enjoy her winters in Phoenix and moved to Kelowna, BC in 2004 to be closer to immediate family.

Throughout her life Helen was active in politics and both she and Nick loved nothing better than a good political debate. Helen loved gardening, reading, playing cards and socializing with friends and family.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren teaching them about everything from collecting eggs to baking buns or playing cribbage. The Adamack farm was home to numerous gatherings where the coffee pot was always on and company was always welcome.  Helen had a rich life and she will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.

Saskatchewan was always home for Helen and a celebration of her life will be held at the 55 Club, 103-3rd Avenue West, Assiniboia, SK on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
