We Remember

ATKINSON, Court

The family of Gordon Courtney Atkinson is deeply saddened to announce the death of Court in his 90th year on December 30th, 2017 at the Glenmore Lodge, Kelowna B.C.

Court is survived by his brother Carson of Chipman N.B.; his son Bryan Walker (Patricia) of Cobble Hill B.C.; granddaughters Heather (Tony) and Lauren (Mark); great-grandchildren Nikka, Alexei and Sebastian Kopcok, and Samuel and Benjamin Hainsworth; as well as nieces Susanand Carmen, and nephews Richard, Joseph, Courtney and Mark, along with many others in
this extensive family, who are too numerous to list here.

Court was predeceased by his father Gordon; his mother Hazel; brother Glenn; sister Carmieta; his wife Jess; step-son Thomas; brother-in-law Carl; and sister-in-law Doris.

Court was born November 16th, 1928 in Springhill N.S. and grew up on the family farm in Southampton N.S. Court joined the R.C.M.P. in 1950 and after training in Ottawa, was transferred to New Brunswick. In 1952 Court was transferred from New Brunswick to British Columbia following the dissolution of the former B.C. Provincial Police in 1950. Court served at 12 detachments ranging between Prince Rupert and Grand Forks. It was Court’s service in British Columbia that motivated him to make B.C. his home.

Court left the R.C.M.P. in 1955 to explore his passion in business (boat building), public relations (BC Hydro), marketing (agricultural equipment) and finally real estate and farming. But the R.C.M.P. would never truly leave him. In the early 1990s, Court joined the R.C.M.P. Veterans Association, Okanagan Division, finally becoming a Life Member in 2000.  It was during his early years in Vancouver real estate that he met Jess, who would soon become his wife of almost 50 years. After leaving Vancouver, Court and Jess settled in Kelowna in the early 1970s, purchasing an acreage overlooking Kelowna. It was at that point that Court turned his hand to farming, planting his orchard of cherries for market.  Court and Jess lived on their beloved orchard until Jess’s death in 2014, with Court staying on until making the decision to move into Kelowna’s “Dorchester” senior’s apartment in 2016.  Following a tumble from his electric scooter in late August this year, it became clear that Court would not rebound from his broken hip.

With over half of his life being spent in Kelowna, Court reaped the benefits of having numerous friends and interests that engaged him, and brought other people to him. Court was never one to shy away from providing a helping hand to those in need, be they family, friends, neighbours or people down on their luck. Having learned the piano at an early age, his voice too became part of the music in his life. Artistic capacity was explored throughout his life, as an artisan, painter, musician and conversationalist.

Court will be sorely missed by family and friends from all across Canada. He lived life to the fullest, always making the effort to expand his social circle – one person at a time.

A celebration of Courts life will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 2710 E. Kelowna Road, Kelowna at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 13th 2018. Reception to follow.  In lieu of flowers, we graciously ask donations be made to the Salvation Army or the BC-SPCA.

  • Chris R says:

I just heard about “Mr. Atkinson’s” passing. ( he didn’t like me calling him that, but I have a smile on my face as I say his name aloud)
I work at a corner store a couple of “houses” down from where he and “Mrs” lived.
You would send a his presence when he would drop in…..his personality. 🙂
And his cherries that he allowed my husband and I to “take” were delicious!
When he moved “downtown” I did miss him drop in for his cigarettes.
We will miss his ” peace be with you” when he would exit the doors.
