BACKHOUSE (nee Platts), Barbara Anne

April 29, 1935 — October 1, 2016

Barbara was born on April 29th 1935 and passed away at home and in her sleep on October 1st 2016. She is survived by daughters: Lynn Cassidy (Dwayne), Dawn Robson (Ron Ramsdale), Tania Hoogveld (Jeff) and step-daughter: Sue Martin (Tom). She is also survived by grandchildren: Sara, Taryn and Brett Cassidy, Colin Bonten, Alishia and Dylan Hoogveld, Vanessa and Josh Ramsdale and Erik and Samantha Martin. She is also survived by her extended family in England including one brother, Peter Platts. She is predeceased by her second husband, George Backhouse. Barbara was born in Doncaster, England and after time in Edinburgh and London, came across to Canada through the US in the early 1960’s with her first husband, Peter Robson. They settled in Mission, BC and after her children were in school, Barbara returned to university in the early 1970’s and became an elementary school teacher. She moved to the Okanagan in 1981, teaching primary grades and enjoying an active life. She enjoyed travelling and took a year off of work when she was 51 to backpack through the South Pacific, Australasia and the Orient. She visited over 50 countries in her lifetime. Barbara was very committed to her family and provided for many wonderful experiences. Always eager to experience new things, Barbara was active, enjoyed time with her friends and also volunteered through many agencies, especially after she retired and moved to Sandpointe (Kelowna) in 1997. Barbara was diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier this year and initially rallied well after surgery. Unfortunately, she succumbed to later complications. She remained at home under the care of her daughters until she passed.

Many thanks to her wonderful friends at Sandpointe and beyond and to the home care nurses who supported her and her daughters. She will be forever remembered as a loving mother/grandmother, friend, traveller and volunteer. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, Oct 22nd at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. Condolences

  • Zak Kline says:

I met Barb at the Central Okanagan (then Kelowna) Community Food Bank in 2013. I started working there in a sort of volunteer-coordinator role soon after, meaning the poor lady had to look to me for direction. Luckily, she and some of the other volunteers knew the way things worked much better than I did, and they helped me to an incalculable extent.

I’ll remember two things in particular about Barb. The first was her willingness to pitch in on our “front line”–an often-stressful task I knew she didn’t prefer, but one at which I was perpetually short of volunteers. I was always especially grateful for Barb’s help on those days.
The second was sometime last autumn, around which time I was trying to lose weight and generally take better care of myself. One day the ladies in the kitchen were commenting on it, and Barb interjected with “y’know if I were a few years younger I might come after you myself”. It was quintessential Barb: mischievous and funny but also very sweet.

Tuesdays and Thursdays were never quite the same after she left, but I’m glad I got to know her as long as I did.
