We Remember

BASTIAANSSEN, Tony

January 21, 1940 — May 16, 2017

Tony, owner and operator of “Tony’s Sharp Shop” for over 20 years, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2017 at the age of 77. Tony is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Judy and their 6 children: John (Wendy) and children Julia, Gabrielle and Caroline; Corinne and son Anthony; Anthony (Debbie) and children Marc, Cameron and Jessica; Christina and son Chris; Allison Bottomley (Brad Johnson) and children Aldous and Clara; Laura Bottomley and children Sawyer and Iris. Tony is also survived by his brother John of the Netherlands, sisters, Nellie of New Zealand and Corinna of Australia, mother of his four children Julie Lacerte-Gerrie, and extended family and friends.

Tony was born in Breda, Netherlands in 1940. He immigrated to Canada to work as a farm hand in Dugald, Manitoba at the age of 19. From Manitoba, Tony made his way west to Calgary, becoming an ironworker, meeting his first wife and starting a family of 4 children. It was also in Calgary where Tony had his first work accident; told he would never recover, Tony proved everyone wrong and continued West to Kelowna with his family in 1971. It was in Kelowna where he raised his family and established the Kelowna landmark  “Tony’s Sharp Shop”.

Tony and Judy were married in 1986 with friends and family present. In 1994, Tony retired and he and Judy moved to Grand Forks for a brief stay. In 2002, they returned to Kelowna to be closer to their family. In Kelowna, Tony and Judy continued to be involved in their community and active members in the Elks Lodge 52.

In the summer, Tony and Judy enjoyed camping throughout the Okanagan and beyond in their 5th wheel trailer. Tony loved to travel with Judy and together they made frequent trips back to Europe and also explored Australia and New Zealand. Tony enjoyed making wine and fancied himself a master vintner, despite popular opinion. As an avid gardener, Tony took pride in his property, fruit trees and flowers. Fortunately with his large family, he had many ‘helpers’ to maintain the gardens to perfection.

Tony will be fondly remembered for his avid storytelling, sense of humour and friendship.

  • Corinna Urselmann says:

Tony , I have so many happy memories of us as young kids. You’ve always had a wicked sense of humour and were very imaginative . You’ve had your ups and downs in your life and at the times when the going got tough , coped remarkably well. Your favourite saying was : We Bastiaanssens are a tough breed .
When you met Judy you told me that she was a ” Godsend ” and found true love and happiness with her.
May you rest in peace , look down at us from heaven and inspire us.
You will be missed by family and by your many friends , love , Corinna .

  • Jan Bastiaanssen says:

My condoleances to Judy and the childeren. I’m sad to say goodbye for the kast time to my brother Tony. The first time when he was 18 and left The Netherlands. As kids ten years age difference is much. When he was playing, I was alteady working. Working at the Mill of our aunt. In those days emigration meant that you would not see other again, since travelling was too expesive. Trough letters we read about his severve accidents and his tough fights to to get on both feets again. What a strong will my brother had. Since travelling was getting more easily, i’ve visit him a few times. The last time was at his 25th weddinganniversary with Judy. It was good to see HIM and Carl, my two Canadian brothers. I enjoyed it very much, though I’m not a man of many words, nor of showing emotions. Tony will be remenbered by my as an adventurious, enthousiastic brother. My thoughts are with you. Jan Bastiaanssen
