We Remember

BUDGEN, Claire

Claire was born in Westlock, Alberta and died in Kelowna, British Columbia on January 3, 2017 surrounded by loving family and her partner Scott. Claire was a lifelong learner attaining her baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees. She dedicated her work at the University of British Columbia Okanagan and Okanagan College to educating others. Her shining intellect and her generous and caring presence enriched the lives of many who knew her.

Claire was a Registered Nurse and a skilled dedicated clinician, educator and researcher. Her commitment to excellence was the foundation of all her work. Over her career, Claire provided visionary and innovative leadership in mental health, nursing education and in promoting the health and wellbeing of campus communities. The impact of her work was far reaching and extended beyond the Okanagan community into provincial, national and international arenas.

She will be dearly missed by her colleagues, friends locally and around the world and of course, by her loving family. She died as she lived, with tremendous dignity and courage. For those who knew and loved her, it will be an honour to follow Claire’s example.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on February 5, 2017 at the Capri Hotel.

Clara and I were shocked to hear of the passing of your mother Claire. We will miss her smiling face as she passed our acreage almost every day and her friendly wave. Our condolences go out to all. Cheers Ron and Clara Sulz

  • Henry & Judy Fenton says:

Our deepest sympathy Carmen, Jed, Sandy and family on your great loss. We enjoyed visiting with Claire whenever we were out that way and appreciated her taking the time to attend Tims service in 2015. Unfortunately we will be unable to attend her service as Henry has recently had surgery and will be seeing his surgeon on Friday afternoon. Our thoughts are with you at this time. Love Henry and Judy

  • Carol Willoughby says:

My sincere sympathies to Claire’s family and dear close friends. Claire was such a gentle and kind person, who was deeply passionate about her work, the students and her colleagues. It was a joy to know and work with her, even if only for a short time. Claire – you will be truly missed, but never forgotten!

  • Jan Appleton says:

I am deeply saddened to hear of Claire’s passing. She was tremendously inspiring and supportive to me when it came to our shared interest in Public Health. I will always remember her for her passion and enthusiasm.

  • Jenny Tucker says:

    Dear Carmen and Jed,

I was shocked to hear of dear Claire’s death. In fact I cannot believe it. Please accept my deepest love and sympathy.

CLAIRE was a wonderful friend to me over my years at OUC . She understood the way I thought and we spent many hours discussing life, love and the world at large especially our shared work in Africa. As the ‘Department of Trees’ we walked often in the forest behind her lovely home. During the Kelowna fires I camped at her place and we sat on what I called her ‘pink porch’ for hours counting our blessings. We shared many moments.

    I will miss her dearly.

The last time I saw her was when I stayed and took part in the amazing conference she designed. She seemed so beautifully well and shone throughout the event. I knew she had been ill last year but believed she was going to recover fully.

She told me she and her partner Scott would visit me in New Zealand. I never met Scott but understood from her that he made her very happy.

I will be thinking of you all at her memorial service which I know will be outstanding. She being loved and admired by so many. I am sorry not to be there.

    Sincerely,
    Jenny Tucker

  • Mary Bates says:

I am very saddened to hear of Claire’s passing. We were nursing colleagues and friends for over 20 years sharing many a walk and a glass of wine. I so appreciated her perspective on life, her mentor ship and her sense of adventure. She always found a way to overcome what seemed insurmountable barriers. My condolences to her family. I am so sorry I won’t be able to attend the service. She will be especially in my thoughts on Feb 5th.

  • Shelley says:

I have just learned that Claire has died and I am so saddened. Claire was a welcoming face and an encouraging mentor when I worked as a Nurse Clinician at UBCO in 2005/06. My deepest condolences to her family, Scott and her many friends and colleagues at UBCO.

  • Brent Pellegrini says:

I just found out about Claire’s passing. I have been writing about my days in Sun Valley and in Istanbul and Istanbul and Claire was a part of both. We had some great times in Istanbul. She was one of the most intelligent and grounded people I’ve ever known. She is in my writings.
