We Remember

DEDINSKY, Louis Peter

In memory of Louis Peter Dedinsky, beloved husband, adored father, loving grandfather, and life-long educator, who surrendered peacefully to the Lord on August 6, 2016. He was born on March 13, 1926 in Nanaimo, British Columbia. He will be missed by his loving daughters Stacy Jaschke (Ken), Susan Bowser (Dave), daughter–in-law Janet, and grandchildren: Michael, Amanda (Aaron), Jennifer, Chris, Geoff, and Samara. He was predeceased by his brother Tom, sister Marguerite, wife Ethel of 49 years, son Greg, and granddaughter Courtney. He began teaching in Surrey in 1947 and moved to Dawson Creek, Kelowna, Trail and then back to Kelowna. In 1959 he became the youngest principal in Kelowna, opening up George Elliot High School. He then became principal of Kelowna Secondary School before moving to the Board Office as Director of Secondary Instruction. Louis co-authored the brief to the Giles Commission, which lead to the creation of the Okanagan College. He was also one of the founding members of COBS – the Central Okanagan Bursary Society. To complete his incredible professional career, he left the board office in 1977 and went back to teaching and counselling, his true passion. After 36 years of teaching he became Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Nelson, and ended his career in that capacity.

We are so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. We last saw and visited your dad at Cottonwoods while also visiting our mother. My memory goes way back to your mom and dad living across the street from Rutland High School. Your dad hired me in 1972 to teach at K.L.O junior secondary. It was an honour to get to meet you three as you grew up in Kelowna at K.L.O. And OKM. We are unable to attend your dad’s service as we are travelling to Edmonton. We hope you will forever tell your kids how great their grand parents were.
