We Remember

DICKRAN, George Thomas

April 30, 1922 — August 1, 2017

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the passing of George Thomas Dickran. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed, but we are thankful he is no longer suffering. George was born on April 30th, 1922 in Calgary, Alberta and went to be with his Lord and Saviour on August 1st, 2017 in Kelowna, BC.

George is predeceased by his siblings, Bob and Florence and his first wife, Estelle. Surviving family members include his loving wife, Marlene, children Richard Dickran (Ellis) of Jakarta, Indonesia and Ruth Young (Gary) of Kelowna, BC, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. George was the last surviving member of his generation in the family.

George joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve when he was 18 and was in charge of medical records for the west coast. He served in Esquimalt, BC for four years along with his dear friend, Einar Domeij. After leaving the Navy, George attended Bible College for one year during which time he met Estelle.

George and Estelle married in 1946 and later had two children. George moved his family to Santa Barbara, California where they lived from 1960 to 1969 at which time they moved to Kelowna and opened a high-end furniture store called “Trend of Times Interiors” as well as “Cantex Fabrics”. George retired at the age of 77 to allow him time to care for his wife, Estelle, before she passed away shortly before their 60th anniversary.

George and Marlene were married in 2006 and Marlene considers her 11 years of marriage to him to be an honour, privilege, and a gift from God. Together they attended Evangel Church and were involved in facilitating Sunday services at numerous care homes.

George was a very social person and loved to read, play golf, and play Rook and Canasta with friends. He was a kind and sensitive gentleman whose love for his family and friends was only surpassed by his love for God.

We would like to thank Dr. Hart for his care for George over the years as well as the staff at Brookhaven Care Center for their kind and compassionate care for George and his family.

The family will be holding a private internment service for George. A memorial service will be held at Evangel Church (3261 Gordon Drive) on Saturday August 12th, 2017 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Evangel Church or to Kelowna Gospel Mission.

Condolences

  • Chris King says:

It was a great privilege to meet George at Brookhaven. In the short time I knew George I soon came to realize what a kind and wonderful man he was. I could also see this with all the residence at Brookhaven. Everyone wanted to be around George for his kind nature. Some residence even called him Pappa which I thought was so wonderful. George loved to visit wth my dog Finnegan and always had a great story to tell about his pets in the past.
George will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and loving him.
