We Remember

DONAHUE, Mark Joseph

February 20, 1955 — July 7, 2017

Mark enjoyed a busy childhood in Quesnel. He loved ice hockey at Dickies’, ping pong during classes, flag football with the Rednecks, tennis with Dad and most of all, basketball with the team.

He was a fanatical sports fan and his knowledge of player/team statistics was extraordinary.

His quick wit and good sense of humor made him many life-long friends. Mark moved to Vancouver shortly after graduation.  He worked at the West Vancouver Memorial Library for 25 years.  It was a good combination of his love of books, newspapers and people.  His co-workers were his extended family and he cared for them deeply.  Mark’s life wasn’t easy but he focused on the positive, lived simply, enjoying an active routine in the city he loved.  He was a dear uncle to Sam and Benjamin, a loving brother to Sean (Betty) and Jane (Ben), a cherished son to Joyce.

Mark has been reunited with his dad, Leo, his best friend. Missed but never forgotten.  Special thanks to the entire staff on “D” Ward at Cottonwoods and to Chris and Carol for years of special attention to Mark.

An extraordinary person and a very special friend, Mark will be greatly missed. We became fast friends after meeting as colleagues at West Van library, discussing world problems while shelving books. Besides playing tennis, rollerblading, running, going out for a beer or two, my fondest memories are of our road trip to Kelowna to meet his amazing family, and our annual visit to the Vancouver jazz festival. One year he wa late to meet me. After about 20 mins, worried, I started walking towards his apartment. Soon here he comes charging down the street, looking a little stressed, with two Starbucks coffees in his hands. Out of breath, he hands me one, saying “so sorry I had to go home to add the Kahlua!” If you ever needed the answer to most any question – sports, current affairs, history, anything whatsoever, I knew he was the one to ask. He was extremely witty and had the quirkiest sense of humour, which is probably one reason we got along so well. Goodbye, Mark, my dear friend. Say hi to your Dad for me.

  • Fred Rogger says:

Mark was one of the nice older guys in my early life. He was my older brother Carl’s friend and was always around when we played football or watched sports. I wish I had been able to play tennis with him, as it is now my favourite sport, and I always knew the Donahues were tennis fanatics. I’m happy to learn that Mark spent most of his adult life in a library, the best place for him, I’m sure. Kindness always shares forward and Mark’s sensitive sensibilities will bear fruit among those who knew him for their lives. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

  • van Donkelaar Family says:

It was with great sadness that we read of Mark’s passing. We remember that he was in the same Rehab room at KGH as my husband Arie and realized we were all from Quesnel. We send on our condolences and our love to all of Mark’s family

  • Tricia Egan says:

Hello cousin Jane & Sean, I saw your condolence for my Mom & would like to thank you very much for your kind words. It is so appreciated at this tough time. I noticed Mark’s name was not on them & I had not realized he had passed last July. I am so sorry to have heard this. I remember one time, cousin Peter & I were at the pub & cousin Mark was sitting at a table with a few friends, just laughing it up! That is how I remember Mark, always laughing & smiling. He was a kind soul. Every time we head up to Barkerville, I always think of you folks!
    Take Care, Tricia Egan
