We Remember

DOOLEY, Kevin Michael

July 9, 1950 — January 25, 2017

Passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the age of 66. Survived by his loving wife Jo-Anne; daughter Angela Dooley (Don Amor) of Burnaby; grandchildren Kyle and Bethanee; sisters Colleen Lee of Tsawwassen, Maureen Dooley (Danny Presley) of Burnaby; brothers Patrick (Sandy) of New Westminster, Terry (Marilyn) of North Vancouver, Dennis (Darlene) of New Westminster, Shawn of Delta and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kevin was the third of 7 children of Mac and Jeannine. He was born in Winnipeg but the family moved to Vancouver when he was 4 years old. The family settled in Marpole and he attended St. Anthony’s Catholic elementary school. He went to high school at Sir Winston Churchill, and that is where he discovered his love of woodworking. He had a close bond with his woodwork teacher Mr. Doerksen and built many items for his mother Jeannine. Kevin was an athlete in school as well, running for the Vancouver Olympic Club.

Shortly after high school he married Elizabeth English and they moved to Campbell River. While there, he built his first house with his friend Wayne and shortly after Angela was born. The family lived in Gold River for a while where Kevin worked in the mill. They then moved back to Vancouver where he met Jo-Anne, the love of his life, whom he spent 36 years with. Over the years, he did much carpentry training and officially became a carpenter in 1979. His love of woodwork lasted his whole life which he spent building many beautiful pieces of furniture for his and Jo’s house as well as renovating 3 kitchens for her. He loved doing miniature scenes and dollhouses.

Kevin ran his own carpentry businesses various times over the years, but needed the security of a salaried job, so took a job with ICBC, where he worked in building maintenance and later as a driver examiner; all the while still doing woodwork for people. He became a slow-pitch umpire in the 80’s, and joined his brother Pat on many tournament trips to Mexico and Costa Rica. He was always the life of the party, chatting with everyone, and performing at the drop of a hat.

In 2006, he and Jo moved to Kelowna, where he hoped to retire from ICBC, which he accomplished a year later. He spent the next 10 years working off and on as a carpenter/cabinetmaker, building things, hiking, kayaking and basically enjoying life. Kevin and Jo traveled a bit and he did enjoy going to museums but always had his eye on the woodwork.

He will be remembered for his sense of humour and bad jokes, as well as his woodwork.

Condolences

  • Richard and Elaine Gibbons says:

Jo-Anne and the Dooley family; we were saddened to hear of Kevin’s passing. His cabinetry skills were duly noted as not that long ago he made the most wonderful wardrobes for us. He also had a couple jokes to pass along as only he could. We hope that good memories will ease the pain of loss.
    Sincerely,
Richard and Elaine Gibbons, Lake Country

  • Ron Jackson says:
