We Remember

DRURY, Rod

Rod Drury passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in Mountain View Complex Care Facility, Kelowna, on May 8, 2016. He is survived by his loving wife Joyce (née Moody) and their children Donna (Marie-Andrée) of Montreal, Larry (Vicki) of Red Deer, Denise of Banff and sister Carol Lawrence of Kelowna. Rod’s life was enriched by grandsons Matthew (Elaine) of Vancouver and Mark (Alexis) of Red Deer, their mother Dianne (deceased), former son-in-law Bruce Anderson of Banff, “step” granddaughters Susan and Caitlin of Calgary, extended family and many wonderful friends. Rod enjoyed his 30+ year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was proud to be commissioned from the ranks. He had a passion for airplanes and, even close to the end of his life, would always search the skies at the sound of a passing plane. Rod and Joyce made many moves and had some wonderful travels together before happily settling in Kelowna in 1990. Even after numerous strokes left him disabled and unable to live at home, Rod maintained his sense of humour and remained upbeat about his life. His positive and appreciative outlook was reinforced by Joyce’s constant love and by the exceptional kindness of the staff at Mountain View. Rod and Joyce made good friends with staff, volunteers and other residents and their family members at Mountain View – and earlier with those at Brookhaven. Being able to go sailing regularly with the Disabled Sailing Association of British Columbia was a highlight of Rod’s life in recent years. There will be a family memorial gathering at a later date. Should friends desire, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Disabled Sailing Association: C/O DSA Tracy Delorme, 1370 Water Street, Kelowna, V1Y 1J1. • Darlene Laidman says:

Our deepest condolences to Aunt Joyce; my cousins Denise, Larry and Donna and their families.
I remember Uncle Rod as always having a smile (unless one of us kids did something bad…them not so much) . Lol He was the only guy that I knew that loved to read ; I guess that is one of the reasons he was so intelligent! Aunt Joyce; you and Uncle Rod were a great example of a wonderful marriage; there was so much love and respect for each other right up to his last days. Such a loving man that I loved and respected so much; he will be missed by everyone who knew him. Hope you are soaring with the angels Uncle Rod! Love you xoxo

  • Rosalind Ross says:

You folks have been on my mind so much recently, and I even have your name on my list of people to call. Loved the picture of Rod as he always had such a great sense of humour. Peace at last for him, and for all of you. I shall always be remembering Rod each year on my birthday, May 8th. as will you and your family as that is usually around Mother’s Day when families gather. Your loving care for Rod has filled your days for many years, Joyce, but now it’s your time to “reinvent” yourself. Let’s keep in touch more often, dear friend.
