We Remember

ENNS, Henry

September 25, 1916 — May 31, 2016

Surrounded by his family, Henry Enns passed into the presence of the Lord on May 31, 2016 at the age of 99.

Predeceased by his siblings John, Jake, Margaret, Helen, Sarah and Anne, his loving wife Annie, his eldest daughter Margaret (Walter) and daughter-in-law Margarete (Arthur), Henry is survived by daughter Esther (Norman) and sons David (Doreen), Arthur (Dianne) and Richard (Carol), together with dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will be missed not only by his immediate family, but also by two surviving brothers, Peter (Marie) and George (Helen), and many nieces and nephews who loved and respected their Uncle Henry.

After a successful career as a builder in Kelowna (H. H. Enns Contracting) and active service as a church deacon and church moderator, Henry retired to focus on volunteer work, golf, travel and connecting with family. He was known widely for his gracious leadership and wise counsel.

After age 95, Henry moved to Menno Home in Abbotsford, and expressed much appreciation for the care he received. He passed away after a bout of pneumonia—missing his upcoming 100th birthday, but not missing out on the far greater celebration in heaven!

Condolences

  • Ruth & Ernie Penninga says:

Our sincere condolences to the family of Henry Enns. We will remember him for his quiet, gentle spirit, and for his wisdom. May loving memories help guide you through this tough time!

  • Nancy and Bob Hepting says:

Dear Art, Esther, David, and Richard,
We were saddened to hear of Uncle Henry’s passing but we are confident, as you are, that he is now rejoicing with Jesus and the family that has gone on before. Uncle Henry was always a gentleman and obviously a man of God. Aunt Annie and Uncle Henry were always a great example to all of us. We pray for God’s comfort for you at this time. We are presently in Phoenix and so can’t be at the service.
    Love, Nancy and Bob

  • Bob Miller says:

My wife Pam and I want to share our heartfelt condolences to all relatives of the Henry Enns family and especially to Rich and Carol and there children and grandchildren. I only met Henry a couple times and the first memory was in 2001 when Henry visited a farm we had just purchased. Our fence was in need of repair to keep the neighbors cows out and Henry was dressed in dress pants and a nice shirt, but he walked along the fence in the woods to help with repairs and he even walked a log to cross a ravine. I thought, this is an 84 year old man who really enjoys life and working. The other time was at Jess’s wedding and Henry put on a hat from our company (Miller Hybrids) and I got a great picture. I had a chance to talk with him and he was so proud of his whole family.
The other way I got to know Henry was through his son Rich. Rich was always proud to take his dad’s hammer on the many short term construction mission trips he went on. Rich was always competitive, but very loving of anyone in need and he spent a lot of effort to befriend those who were in need of a friend or in need of something. I pleased to call Rich my best friend.

May the many memories and lessons learned you all have of your loving Christian father, brother, grandfather or great-grandfather Bob Miller be cherished as you mourn Henry’s death. Remember he lived a long and productive life and is now reunited with his wife in Heaven

    Bob Miller!

    the last sentence was garbled in my condolance. It should say;
May the many memories and lessons learned you all have of your loving Christian father, brother, grandfather or great-grandfather be cherished as you mourn Henry’s death. Remember he lived a long and productive life and is now reunited with his wife in Heaven!

  • Christine (nee Hurd) says:

Oh what to be said about Mr. Enns…he was a rock! I have a very special place in my heart for the Enns’ as they really lived and breathed what they believed. When I was 13 my dad died, I was on my very first baby sitting job. When I got home I still had papers to deliver, Mr. Enns took me and helped me deliver all of those papers. He was a man that I truely felt safe with, loved by and believed in. He touched my life and my familes life in many great ways. I always loved how he showed how much he loved Mrs. Enns, he was so gentle and loving towards her. He, I am sure, touched many many lives over the years and each of us could give little stories here and there. Keith and I and my Mom and I went to see him a few times in Meno Home. He was always so gracious, polite, true and loving. The Enns family was very blessed to have such a man, Father, Grandfather etc in their lives. He taught truth…I wanted to go to the funeral but could not as I could not say goodbye in such a public place and was not ready to lose another great person in my life. I honoured him in my way…I cherish his wisdom…I will always cherish the memories that I have of him. Thank you to the family for sharing such a wonderful soul with us, with me!!!

  • Gladys Loewen says:

Dear Esther, Dave, Art and Rich
I hope you know that Uncle Henry was Mom’s favourite brother in the end because he was gentle in his relationships and accepted differences of ideas and opinions. Mom felt accepted with Henry when it became evident to the Enns family that her frame of reference related to culture, religion, and life style changed after a life of living overseas doing mission work. That acceptance was so important to mom as she felt “safe” with him.
As an uncle, he was always loving, interested in communicating, and connecting. I appreciated that about him so much.
best wishes, cousins, as we all move forward without parents. I have attached the last photo I took of Uncle Henry and Uncle George at the last Enns gathering. so precious.
    love, Gladys
