HENNINGS, Emma

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

Emma, a long-time resident of Kelowna, passed away Thursday the 28th of September at the Village at Smith Creek at the age of 96. Her husband, Albert Heinz Werner Hennings, predeceased her in October 2007.

She is survived by her loving family, Udo Hennings (Bev), Marlies White, Eileen Kempthorne (Gary), her grandchildren, Scott Hennings (Emma-Jane), Sheri Helyar (Nigel), Chris Moffat (Janelle), Colton and Dakota Martel, her great grandchildren, Jenna, Jacob and Bradlee Hennings, Sage and Rhys Helyar, Michael and Andrew Moffat, as well as nephews and nieces in the UK and Germany. Also, her extended family, Phil and Annette White and son Aidan, and Andrew and Jennine White and their children Ella and Finnley, in Hong Kong.

Born in 1921 in Luebeck, Germany, she was the eldest of five children born to Hermann and Berta Gaschke. In 1954 Emma, her husband and two of their children Udo and Marlies, emigrated from Germany, arriving in Kelowna to start their life in Canada as immigrants. Their third child Eileen was born in Kelowna.

During her early years in Canada she was a housekeeper to two lovely families who cherished her and treated her like family. Later worked in the packing house in Rutland where she made many friends that she kept in touch with throughout all these years.

Emma loved to go out to restaurants, particularly for sushi. She loved dancing, card games with her husband, attending events at the German Club and having visitors drop by. All her grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her much joy. She was fun loving, a good sport and loved dressing up for events at the German Club. Everyone who knew her loved her and she would light up the room with her smile.

The family would like to thank all the staff in the Paynter Wing at Village of Smith Creek who took such loving care of Emma. We’re sure Emma will be remembered fondly there.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 10:00 am at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the KGH Foundation, www.kghfoundation.com.

    We are so sorry for your loss. We got to know your Mom & Dad through my Aunt and Uncle (Aurora & George Houle) and I worked with your Mom at the packing house. She was a lovely sweet lady and we enjoyed playing cards with them. God Bless you All and Rest in Peace Emma….
