We Remember
HIKIDA, Terry Takeo
January 22, 1938 — January 13, 2016
Terry was born January 22, 1938 in Vancouver to Gengo “George” and Tome “Elsie” Hikida. He is survived by his sister Margie (Jack) Hatanaka and many nieces and nephews whom he loved and spent time with at sporting events and fishing, being an all around great uncle.
Terry graduated from Kelowna High School and played hockey as a youth. He often spoke of Coach O’Reilly that told the boys, “Don’t fight, don’t fight, don’t fight! BUT if your gonna fight…DON”T LOSE!” Uncle Terry loved to laugh. Terry worked in the sawmill industry for 45 years and first started working in Monte Lake and then in Armstrong.
Upon retirement, he enjoyed very long walks, vegetable gardening, time with family and fishing. He was kind, happy and caring to the end, Terry passed quietly and peacefully five years to the day of joining the Sutherland Hill’s family.
Special thanks to all staff at Sutherland Hills Rest Home, Dr. Swart, Dr. Wickstrom, Burke Sanbrooks and David Henseleit at Springfield Funeral Home.
Terry will be laid to rest with his mother and father at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sutherland Hills Rest Home (Recreation Department), 3081 Hall Road, Kelowna, BC, V1W 2R5 where they took excellent care of Terry for the last five years. My deepest sympathy to the family on Terry’s passing. Terry had a wonderful sense of humour and always had great stories to share. I treasure my memories of the salmon fishing trips to Sooke with George and Terry, always fun even when the fish weren’t biting. Family was very important to Terry and he was a wonderful brother-in-law to me. I will miss him. Love to you all. Shirley and family
My mother is also at Sutherland Hills and I often said ‘hello’ to Terry when visiting her. He always had a smile for me and seemed happy to be acknowledged. I may have taken the last picture of him as he was in the background of a birthday picture we were taking of Mom last Sunday, January 10 (pix is labeled incorrectly). Many residents in that dining room shared her cake with her and Terry stayed after lunch to be watched over by the care aides. Our deepest condolences to his family.
Terry was a great cousin for many years in our youth, in Monte Lake. We grew apart as we went on our special way. I always remember that he looked after me as though he was my brother. He will not be forgotten and next time in Kelowna, I will make a visit. Condolences to Margie and all the family. God Bless, Michael
Margie, Jack, your family and also Joan’s family. So sorry to hear and read of Terry’s passing. We all had fun as young kids in Monte Lake. So many years have passed, but we never forget our friends even though we have each gone to other cities in our lives. My sincere sympathy and condolences to all of you.
