We Remember

HWAY, Gerald “Gerry” Nickolas

September 5, 1940 — January 19, 2017

After a brave battle against sudden, brief illness, Gerry Hway left a space in this world and a bigger hole in our hearts on January 19, 2017. Gerry’s commitment to loving, caring and providing for his family was always a top priority for him. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 54 years, Beverley Hway (nee Morel), a caring father to Tracey Hway and Carrie Hway Courtney, supportive papa to Hayden, Carter and Finley, big brother to Bill Hway and Dan Hway and friend and golf buddy to many. Gerry is survived by his loving mother, Kathleen Hway of Timmins, Ont. He is predeceased by his father, Nick Hway. Born and raised in Timmins, Ont., Gerry and his new bride left their hometown for Toronto. There, he embarked on an exciting and successful career in international and Canadian commercial banking with Scotiabank. Later, he made a switch to investment financing with Corpfinance, which would lead him to his retirement and golf haven in Kelowna, BC. His passion for life was always evident through his vibrant smile, kind and generous heart, sense of humour and fair play and determination on the golf course. Gerry will be greatly missed and always loved. Memorial service will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 565 – 10th Ave W, Vancouver, BC V5Z 9Z9. Always lovely to chat with Gerry when he’d come to the farm for his morning eggs. Giving me tips to better my game on the course or the rancid game he’d had the day before. He had an infectious laugh, a great sense of humour and was so proud of young Finley. Ever the gentleman. He will be missed. Our deepest condolences to Bev, Tracey and family. With affection, Lesley, Michael

I am saddened by Gerry’s passing. He was very kind to me at Bloor and Yonge, Toronto branch of Scotiabank when I came from England in 1972. After my initial training with him, we kept in touch from time to time and enjoyed the odd lunch together. Gerry was a fine gentleman. I extend deepest sympathy to Bev. and family.
