We Remember

JENNENS, Richard “Rick” W.

Rick passed away on January 5, 2018 at the age of 64.  Survived by his loving wife Rosanne (nee Morris); daughter Tanya M. (Jonathan “Jon”) Garratt of Kelowna; son Seung Chul T. (Sunny) Jennens of South Korea; grandchildren Callie, Rose, Garratt; sisters Julie L. (Colin) Cruikshank of Kelowna, Sue (Tom) McLean of Kelowna; brother Terry G. Jennens of Kelowna.  Predeceased by his father Eric Gordon Jennens in 2010 and his mother Sylvia M. Jennens (nee Hyam) in 2017.

In his youth, Rick and his family travelled to Norway where they researched Viking history and Viking ships.  They went on to build an exact replica on the west side of the bridge.  It was then returned to Norway where they trained to sail it on the hopes of sailing it back to America.

After a fire in the family home, in Kelowna, Rick became interested in firefighting.  He applied in March of 1978 and was accepted into Kelowna Firehall #2 as a paid-on-call firefighter.  He went on to become a training officer, then District Chief for paid-on-call at Firehall #1, then Assistant Chief for paid-on-call at Firehall #8 where he was presently stationed.  He helped at many house fires, accident scenes, and spent many hours at the 2003 fire.  During these years he couldn’t pass up a retired (antique) fire truck and so a collection was started.  His first truck was a Kelowna retired 1923 100 ft aerial ladder truck.  Nine trucks, plus assorted fire apparatus later, a building was needed and built in 2013.

He was a founding partner of Heartwood Manufacturing (1986), manufacturing and importing office furniture.

Memorial service will be held on January 13, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Main Firehall #1, 2255 Enterprise Way, Kelowna, BC.  Should family and friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Central Okanagan Hospice House, 2035 Ethel Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 2Z6 or BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund, 3891 Main Street, Vancouver, BC V5V 3N9 www.burnfund.org.

My Sincere Condolences to the Jennens Family and extended family. I was employed at Heartwood Mfg. and always found Rick friendly and quite humorous to work for. I enjoyed seeing the many fire house antiques that he had in his office, and hear the stories of how they were used, and he was always willing to share the history. He will be missed by many in the Kelowna area.

  • Darcy Chorely says:

I had the privilege of working for Rick for over 20 years at Heartwood. Rick’s was an inspirational person in my life with his vision, ability to adapt, knowledge, talents and drive was amazing to witness. Anyone who got to really know him respected him. He would go out of his way to help me out at work or for personal projects and in the community with the Fire Department where he had an undeniable passion. My thoughts and condolences to Rose, Tanya, Seung Chul, Sue and Tom as you grieve for your lose. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.

  • Mike Smart says:

I am so saddened by this news. I learned of this after my return from holidays on Jan 17th. I am in my 29th year with Heartwood. I remember Rick as firm but fair and very supportive of his employees. I know this first hand as Rick and the company were so helpful to me on three occasions where over the years my family of five is now two as my wife a son and a daughter passed on. I miss him always will. I recall at one of the beach parties that seadoos were available and Rick took my son for a ride. Patrick was severely palsied and he loved the ride. I am off to work. Thank you Rick for everything.
