We Remember

KERR, Mary I.

Mary Ingibjorg Thorson was born in Vancouver on July 16, 1916 to Dooley and Emily Thorson, Canadians of Icelandic descent. Mary dearly loved her four brothers (now deceased) and their families, gathering 70 Thorsons and friends together to celebrate her 100th birthday last July.

In 1938 as the first teacher in Carmi’s one-room schoolhouse, Mary boarded in the Kerr Sr. log cabin. Son Danny came home to ski with Mary. When they wed in 1940, Danny Kerr worked in the Beaverdell mines and then became a plumber in North Vancouver. Son Len was born in 1942 and Rob in 1947. They moved to Kelowna in 1958 to run a bowling alley on Pandosy. Mary taught at Central Elementary and Dorothea Walker Schools, the favourite teacher of many students. When Danny died in 2007, Mary felt enormous loss. She still managed to complete two of her five-year plans before she died on New Years Day, 2017.

Mary lives on in the hearts of her two sons, Len (Betty) and Rob (Robin), grandchildren Kathy (Garret), Sherry (Billy), Mike (Erin) and Dan (Allen), six great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and so many friends. The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Jan McIntosh, friend and helper Diane Resener, and the staff of Mill Creek Village Kalamalka unit for their tender care.

At 2 p.m. April 15, 2017, Mary’s Celebration of Life will be held at the Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 5V8 – Tel 250-860-7077.
