We Remember

(KORNELL) NORTHAN, Adele

Adele (Kornell) Northan went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on December 29, 2016. She was born October 5, 1915.  She had eight brothers. She is survived by one brother, Dan.  Her one sister died in infancy.   She will be sadly missed by her two sons, David (Marilyn) and Tim (Janice), six grandchildren, Mark (Sandra), Greg (Debbie), Jennifer (David), Jamie, Danielle and Kristin (Derek), twelve great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.   Adele was predeceased by husbands Joseph Kornalewski, Harry Burke and George Northan.

Adele and her husband, Joseph, came to Kelowna in 1952 to serve as pastor of Grace Baptist Church. Starting in 1956 they provided care for seniors’ in their home. In 1962 they founded Still Waters Private Hospital (now the Village at Mill Creek).  It was the first private hospital in the B.C. interior. Adele was instrumental in the development and operation of several quality health care facilities in Kelowna.  As a result of her vision and foresight the 3rd generation of the Kornell family continue to be involved in the provision of Senior’s Retirement Living throughout the Okanagan.

Adele lived a very active and full life, and was involved in the community and her church. She was an avid “learner” and availed herself of any opportunity to add to her skills. She learned to ski in her 50’s, and played golf into her 90’s.  She travelled extensively throughout the world.  Adele was a women of prayer and continued to be an inspiration to all who knew her.    She lived her 101 years with dignity, grace, and purpose.

A special thank you to the staff at The Village of Mill Creek for their caring concern for Adele. A grateful thank you to Marjorie who was Mom’s special friend and advocate.

A celebration of Adele’s life will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 11 am at Trinity Church, 1905 Springfield Road, Kelowna B.C.

It was always a joy to see Adele at church on Sundays. Her bright and cheerful personality made your day better just by seeing her. We think of her each time we do the dishes using the small scrubbies she loved to make and give away! Our love and best wishes to all the members of her extended family.

  • Dirk Kukler says:

    Dear Dave and Marilyn,
please accept my heartfelt condolences to the passing of your dear mother. Although
I didn’t know her well, I remember her as a vivacious and cheerful lady who seemed
to perfectly apply her insights into graceful ageing and infect others with it.
    God bless,
    Dirk

Your loss is Heaven’s gain! How wonderful that we have the blessed hope of meeting again. I have known Adele since the 1960’s, my grandmother was one of her patients in her home until Stillwaters was built. I know that you will miss her dearly and trust that many happy memories and happy days will lighten this sorrow. She is so much better off. God Bless you–Joy Oxenham

My first memory of Adele was when my father was so well card for while in Joseph-Benjamin Residence, until his passing away. It has been my pleasure in entertaining at the Senior Centres as an Accordionist and in
seeing and chatting with Adele. She was always so inspiring and extending her special interest in people and their well being. Adele will
always be a special memory to me. My heartfelt condolences to her
family at this time of loss. Sincerely, Remi Picco.

It was an honour to meet Adele over the years as the beloved grandmother and mother of Tim and his family at Kelowna Christian School events. It was always evident how kind she was and how loved and revered by her family. God bless the Kornell’s and I am sorry for your loss.

  • Sylvia McTavish says:

I have many a good memory of early Still Waters days—singing a duet with Adele, eating a sauerkraut meal prepared by J.B., and treasuring a pug given to my invalid husband.
The family has had a starring role in helping the older population of this city—from the Pandosy Street home, to Still Waters and on into the community. My sincere condolences to her family.

  • John Kurvink says:

Dear Dave, Tim and family, very sorry to learn of your loss. Your Mum led a wonderful full life and I’m sure you are all very proud of her accomplishments which serve as her testimony. I remember enjoying those delicious cinnamon rolls and coffee with her at Lakeshore Place and responding to her insightful questions about the operations at Westside. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers during this time. God Bless. John and Cindy Kurvink.

  • Janet Wielemaker says:

On behalf of the staff and students at Kelowna Christian School, I would like to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to your family. Adele was an inspirational lady whose generous scholarship made it possible for many of our students to attend Trinity Western University. She will be fondly remembered at KCS for her faith, her commitment to Christian education and her generous and encouraging spirit which impacted the lives of many of our students.

  • Ruth Dingfield says:

Aunt Adele was the BEST aunt a person could have ever had. She was always gracious, poised, and at the same time, got things done, lickety-split! She was always willing to have you over to her home at a moments notice, or take your entire family out to experience some new she had found. She was constantly learning and striving to keep abreast of what what going on around her, the family and the world. At the same time, she spend various hours in the Word of God, from which her strength came. She honored our Lord Jesus Christ util her last breath. She was the highest and best role model we could have ever had and I want to be like her as I grow older in this world. See you in Heaven Aunt Adele.

  • Betty Urness says:

    Dear Tim, Dave and families,
It was such a privilege to know Adele! What an energetic, up-beat, faith-filled woman of God. I am quite sure the Lord kept her here for so long because she had such an impact on so many. She lived at Lakeshore Place when my mother was there. They became good friends and decided that they would do a memory course together to be sure they kept their marbles intact. It must have worked because both of them still had their marbles when they left this earthly home for their heavenly home. I can only imagine the shout for joy when your mother arrived to take her place at the feet of Jesus! She impacted so many with her contagious faith. I know you will miss her but I also know the comfort you are resting in because faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see, “The Hope of Glory”, Adele’s favourite expression. May the fond memories you share with each other sustain and encourage you all in the days ahead.
With kind affection and sincere compassion,
    Betty Urness
