We Remember

LAING, Sharon Marguerite

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death on January 27, 2017 of our beloved mother Sharon Laing of Okanagan Centre. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Wyatt (Sandy) Laing who was by her side when she died peacefully at her home.  Also survived by her children and grandchildren: Mark(Deb) Chey, Jordan and Brelyn of Oshawa; David(Jacquie) Alex and Mattea of Nelson; and Lisa (Shane Watson) Shealyn and Brandt of Lake Country.  Also survived by brothers, Richard (Elaine) Gibbons of Lake Country and Glen (Karen) Gibbons of Lake Country.  Sharon was born on February 24, 1941 in Kelowna General Hospital.  Her first home was a small cabin near Little White Mountain where her parents, Clare and Peggy, operated a mill.  The family moved to their permanent home in Winfield when she started school.  After graduation from Rutland Secondary, Sharon trained as a Registered Nurse at Royal Columbian.  She was a skilled and dedicated nurse working at a variety of hospitals as Wyatt’s career took them to such diverse locations as New Zealand, Germany, Goose Bay in Labrador and Cold Lake, Alberta, before moving to home to Lake Country in 1983.  She retired from KGH in 2006 after assisting at the births of many hundreds of babies.  She was immensely proud of her years in nursing and enjoyed working with a great staff.  She loved the newborns…leaving the diaper changing to the nursery staff.  Sharon loved her Okanagan home surrounded by their orchard and the pastures for Wyatt’s horses.  Summer days were spent at “The Cabin”, the family’s ancestral spot on the lake just down the road, hanging out with her brothers and her much loved sis’s-in-law.  Her family were at the center of her life with her books and love of reading close behind.  She volunteered with our museum and she and Wyatt were generous in their support of myriad causes, both home and far away.  She will be deeply missed by so many of us with whom she shared her love without question.  A celebration of her life will be held at the Okanagan Centre Hall, 11099 Maddock Avenue, Okanagan Centre, BC, on Saturday, February 4th at 2:00 p.m.   Donations in Sharon’s memory may be made to The Salvation Army www.kelownasalvationarmy.ca.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

Sharon,I hope your family knows how much I cherished your friendship. You and I shared many rides home after working nights at KGH so many years ago. I remember you would talk all the way home in order to keep me awake while driving. We shared our love of nursing, our love of family and friends. I feel so blessed to have visited you and Sandy last September. You would never know that so many years had passed since we had seen one another. I know that you are singing with joy in heaven and walking unaided. We will see one another again. To your family I wish that somehow they will gather to remember all the wonderful memories you have given them. To Sandy I wish you comfort and peace.

I want to extend my most sincere condolences to Sandy, and family for the loss of a lovely lady.
Sharon will be greatly missed by not only her husband, children & grand children, but by her brothers, and sister-in-laws, Richard & Elaine, and Glen & Karen and all their families.
May your memories of her give you much joy as you remember her life, along with all the many others that she touched.
I hope it helps in some small way to know that others truly care.

    Hi Grandma,

I really enjoyed baking cookies, chatting, playing bochee ball (:)), and driving with you to vernon to buy sour dough buns. Also, talking with you about politics (some stuff you said was over my head), my advances in academia, and, also, looking out at the night sky from the balcony.

    Miss you,

    Jorden

My deepest sympathy to Sandy & family. I worked for many years with Sharon & enjoyed every minute. Sharon was such a lovely person,so cool, calm & collected .& great working
companion. Such a proud Mom. Wonderful family . I too, had rides with Sharon after work & what amazed me she drove bare footed. My life is richer, just in knowing & working with the lovely lady.

Sandy and family – I was saddened to hear of your loss of a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Sharon was all of those things and she will be so very, very missed. She leaves behind many memories that you will cherish forever.

I worked at KGH on the obstetrics ward for 13 years. Sharon and I worked many night shifts together and when it was quiet we would talk about our families, music and books. At that time, Blue Rodeo was her favorite. She was a voracious reader and read many genre.
Sharon had a wonderful personality – honest, ethical, intelligent, calm, caring .
