We Remember

MACKANDY-GRAY, Marlene (née Sweline)

It is with deep sadness that the family of Marlene MacKandy-Gray (née Sweline) announce her passing on January 15, 2021, at the age of 78. She fought a long battle with lung cancer and COPD and passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Kelowna Hospice House.

Marlene was born in Edmonton, Alberta and was the youngest of four children. She was predeceased by her father Virgil (Charlie) Sweline; her mother and step-father, Jessie and Tom Roberge; as well as her two brothers and countless other family and friends whom she loved and missed immensely.

She is survived by her children Suzanne (Raymond), Diane, Dean (Danna), and Randy; her cherished grandchildren Chelsea, Parker, Derek and Daniel (Brianna); as well as many extended grandchildren whom she loved all dearly. Marlene is also survived by her brother Robert (Mona) and her loving nieces and their families. This past year it filled Mom’s heart to be able to spend time with her brother and nieces on their trips to Kelowna to visit her. It was a beautiful time for them to all reconnect and create such beautiful memories which she held dear to heart.

Family is not always blood, and Marlene left behind another family that was always an enormous part of her life, her lifelong best friend Maryjoan and her children and their families. Mom and Maryjoan were best friends for over 50 years and loved each other immensely. “Marsey” and “Aunty Mar” touched everyone’s life in this family in one way or another, and she will be deeply missed.

You taught us how to love unconditionally, and you will forever live in everyone’s hearts. Rest easy our beautiful Momma, you will be dearly missed. We know you are in your glory in heaven seeing all your dogs and beloved cat Binbin as well as everyone who went before you.

A heartfelt thank-you to Mom’s home palliative care nurses and Dr. Perri who showed such extreme compassion, understanding, and support during these past 6 months, also to the Kelowna Hospice House for all that they did to make Mom’s last week as comfortable as possible. A warm thank-you to the Brar family ~ Mom thought the world of you all. We appreciate your enormous support and always being there to help when Mom needed it. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice House Kelowna, www.hospicehousekelowna.com or the Kelowna SPCA, www.spca.bc.ca/locations/kelowna.

There will be no service at this time, but please click here to enjoy the beautiful memorial video that was created by Marlene’s granddaughter Chelsea to honor her Nana and show how much she was loved by everyone whose lives she touched.
