McKERNAN, Darlene

September 2, 1932 — January 24, 2018

Darlene McKernan (nee Ooley) passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018 after a long illness, at the age of 85.

She is survived by her children: Leslie Ann (John) Van De Ligt of Sherwood Park, AB, Robin (Jim) Hominuk of Seattle, WA, Tim McKernan of Niagara Falls, ON, and Lori McKernan of Edmonton, AB; 6 grandchildren, and multiple great-grandchildren; brother Boyd Ooley, and sister Myrna Parish.

Darlene is predeceased by her husband Austin McKernan.

Darlene was known for her quick wit and humor and was an amazing cook in her time. She was also very proud of her Miss Edmonton 1947 status and would make sure that this information was widely shared. A bigger smile you have never seen; she loved oil painting and reading a good book with her dog curled up on her lap. She will be dearly missed.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Village at Mill Creek (Shannon and Oyama Wings) for the loving care that Darlene (and Austin) received.

At Darlene’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

    Just to say that my mother and I have been visiting Shannon residents on Thursday afternoons for the past five years and it was always a delight to see Darlene and Austin’s devotion to one another, laugh with Darlene at her quick repartees, and latterly, draw her up to our table to be part of the circle of residents involved in whatever activity in which we were engaged, and to watch her eyes brighten and mouth break into a smile. It’s been a pleasure knowing Darlene and Austin, (always a gentleman), and they will be missed.

    Dear Robin So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I came weekly to visit and serve her dinner. What a pleasure.! I was the one who came away being the one “served” smiles and witt. I will miss her. And of course Austin as well! Their table will always be their table to me.

    Being a care aid for Darlene (and Austin) was a joy. I soon thought of them as friends.They had great social manners and Darlene with her quick wit always had us laughing. Austin was the ultimate gentleman. They ate a lot of ice cream and drank a lot of coffee, which they always thanked us for. We knew they’d earned it. Darlene carried on like a trooper after Austin passed. I miss them. My condolences to Jim and Robin and the rest of the family.
