KAYBAN, Nicholas Peter Mark
Nicholas went to be with the Lord on July 8, 2010. He was born March 29, 1931 at Weasel Creek, Alberta to Peter and Katie Kaban. Nicholas spent his early years helping on the family farm and with the family store in Weasel Creek, Alberta. After graduating early at age 16, he set out from home. He worked on the railway and was stationed at Prince Rupert. There he contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized for 5 long years. During his stay at the sanatorium in Tranquille, Nicholas met the love of his life, Frances Doering. They were married November 30, 1957. Nicholas had several interesting positions. He was: head of security for Eldorado Mining in Uranium City, manager for Sears, owner of a wholesale men’s wear company, owner of a junior hockey team, the first business development manager for Canada Trust, head of housing for the non-status Indians for British Columbia and owner of a natural gas company in Alberta. Nicholas was a generous, outgoing, charismatic man. He gave freely of his time to be an advocate for many people and a passionate warrior for many worthy causes. He served on boards of non-profit organizations and churches. He was always immersed in politics and worked tirelessly behind the scenes his entire life. Nicholas and Frances raised their children Cathy and Mark in the Okanagan. Nicholas was the biggest fan of his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Frances Kayban, who passed away January 10, 2010. He is survived by his family; Cathy (Murray) Richter, Mark (Veronica) Kayban, grandchildren: Michael and Sarah Richter, Nicholas, Abrielle and Luther Kayban; sister Victoria (John) Toronchuk; brother Peter Kaban; mother-in-law Mary Doering; sister-in-law Hedy Doering and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Nicholas will be deeply missed by those who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on July 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. at First United Church, 721 Bernard Ave., Kelowna, B.C. with Reverend Medland officiating. Donations may be made to the Cancer Society.
