Caverhill, Mac (2010-07-20)
MALCOLM “MAC” STUART CAVERHILL March 18th , 1920 – July 20th, 2010 Malcolm Caverhill passed away suddenly at home in West Kelowna, BC on July 20th, 2010. He is survived by daughters Diane Ganten of Canoe, BC; Barbara (Ward) Kemerer of Revelstoke, BC; granddaughters Mara and Kelly Ganten of Canoe, BC; sister Jean (Walter) McGinn of Fredericton, NB; sister-in-law Isabel Caverhill of Fredericton, NB; many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews in NB and Ontario. He was predeceased by wife Joan; parents Florence and Herbert Caverhill; sisters Ethel (Albert) Whitehead and Alma (Edison) MacFarlane; brothers Lloyd and Gerald (Avis) and Allison (Isabel) Caverhill; brother-in-law Walter McGinn. Mac was born and raised in Caverhill, NB. After school he joined the RCAF. During WWII, he was stationed in London, England, providing ground support for any and all bombers which managed to get back from air raids. Upon returning to Canada after the war with his bride, Joan, he joined Trans Canada Airlines during it’s 9th year of operation. After being posted in Iceland for 6 months, followed by 6 months in Bermuda, Mac and Joan settled in Montreal and later in Pointe Claire, QC and raised daughters Diane and Barb. The TCA family was small and tight and when the family would get bumped off flights, Mac had friends across the whole system who would welcome the Caverhills to stay with them. When TCA became Air Canada the fraternity grew to be huge, but Mac always kept in touch with his colleagues. Mac finished his career with Air Canada, directing modifications to The Boeing 747 and the Lockhead L-1011 widebodied aircraft. In order to do that, he spend a great deal of time in Seattle and at Edwards’ US Airforce Base. When the aircraft were ready, he would catch a ride home with the crew ferrying the planes. After retiring from Air Canada, Mac and Joan moved to Peachland, BC twenty-five years ago. In recent months, Mac was living at the Westwood Retirement Resort in West Kelowna, where he was absolutely spoiled rotten by all the staff – well deserved, we thought. Our gratitude goes out to the staff for showing Mac such a great time. Mac was quiet, kind and generous and was a devoted family man. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbours, not to mention the gang at TCA/Air Canada. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Mac’s name to the B.C. Heart and Stroke Foundation. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010 at 10:00 am at Springfield Funeral Home at 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.
