We Remember

PEDERSON, Harriet Judith (nee Hagen)

Harriet Judith Pederson (nee Hagen) was born in Hagen, SK on April 26, 1922.  She passed away peacefully at the Kelowna Hospice House on Aug.15, 2018 at the age of 96.

Harriet was the middle child (fourth of seven) born to Hans and Alma Hagen. She was raised on the family farm near Hagen, SK that was homesteaded by her father. She attended school in Hagen and then worked at Magnet Grocery in Prince Albert. In 1952, Harriet moved to Vancouver and worked as a bookkeeper for Taylor, Pearson and Carson. Church was always a very important part of her life. Shortly after arriving in Vancouver, Harriet met the love of her life Orville at choir practice while at First Lutheran Church. They were married there on Aug.6, 1954. Orville and Harriet lovingly raised their three children: Barry, Darlene and Cheryl. The family lived in Vancouver, North Delta, North Vancouver and Chilliwack. While in Delta, Harriet worked as a Cosmetician for fifteen years at Zellers. In 1993, Orville and Harriet moved to Kelowna and enjoyed the rest of their retirement life in the Okanagan.

Harriet was always an active church member involved in choirs, ELW, altar guild, seniors’ activities and any other jobs that were needed. At home, she enjoyed reading, sewing, listening to music, crossword puzzles and spending quality time with family members. She was a compassionate and caring mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend who has left a wonderful legacy of happy memories for all those who knew her. She never complained, but rather looked for a positive way to approach situations.

Harriet is survived by her three children Barry (Pam Hegedus) of Chilliwack, Darlene Makasoff (Gerry) of Kelowna, Cheryl Millen (Crawford) of Maple Ridge and her six grandchildren: David and Mark Pederson, Kevin and Brian Makasoff, Ashley and Megan Millen. She is also survived by her sister Helen Salte and brother Clarence (Ruth) Hagen. She was predeceased by her loving husband Orville of 54 years, her parents Hans and Alma and her siblings: Irene Hagen, Rose Arnstead, Arnold Hagen and Lloyd Hagen. It will be a glorious day in heaven when they are all reunited!

We would like to thank the staff at the Dorchester Retirement Residence and Kelowna Hospice House for the extra special care that they provided during Harriet’s time there.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Aug.24, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Christ Lutheran Church, 2091 Gordon Drive, Kelowna BC with Pastor Ron Sedo officiating. The family requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Harriet to the Kelowna Hospice House, 2035 Ethel St., Kelowna, BC V1Y 2Z6.

So Sorry! Harriet was a pleasure to know; first at Cottonwoods and then sharing a table at the Dorchester. My thoughts are with the family. Lillie

  • ingrid kaldor wife of harold Kaldor says:

I’ve often wondered if they were still around. Orville sang with Harold (his cousin) in the choir and I remember them both well. Orville and Harriette were especially kind to us when we moved to the coast during the war years. They gave us apples which we appreciated. I think fondly of all the Pederson’s. They were really good people. Sorry for the loss.
    Ingrid
