We Remember

PRICE, Vera

March 14, 1929 — March 6, 2019

Vera, known by most as ‘Susie’ Price died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 6th, 2019 at Smith Creek Retirement Home in West Kelowna, BC at the age of 89, just one week short of her 90th birthday. Susie was born March 14, 1929 in Madoc, Ontario, the fifth of seven children to John Gordon and Susan (Burkitt) Gordon. She is predeceased by her husband of 67 years, The Rev. Dr. W. Joseph Price, and survived by three children: Kathryn, Andrew and Peter; five granddaughters: Angela, Melissa, Amanda, Caitlin and Hannah; and three great-grandchildren: Margaux, Lucas and Mason. Joe and Susie were married September 17, 1948 in Madoc, Ontario.

Susie faithfully stood beside her husband Joe through a variety of careers, including launching the family restaurant/gas station business, The Price Brothers’ Log Cabin in Actinolite, Ontario. They served together in Christian ministry beginning in 1954 in an exciting and rewarding service that took them from Webb, Saskatchewan as student ministers to New York for further theological education, to Kingston, Ontario where they began a family, to Lindsay, Ontario and back to Kingston to serve there in administrative church leadership for several years. Joe and Susie moved to Victoria, BC and Fairfield United Church – the ministry years and city most fondly remembered by Susie. Following that, they served with the United Methodist Church in Jamaica, returning to Vancouver Island in BC and then a well deserved retirement in the Okanagan Valley.

Though she shunned the spotlight in preference to allowing her husband to regale the crowds with his powerful preaching voice and sense of humour, Susie will be remembered by all as the consummate Pastor’s wife with a soft voice and gentle spirit. She shone most brightly when doing a public Scripture reading or giving the children’s story. Whether welcoming you as a visitor at the door of one their churches, or as a guest in her home, you were made to feel like the most important person in the world.

  • Jeffrey Young says:

One of the finest Christian ladies I have ever had the pleasure to know. Sweet, smart and beautiful. She is the rock that her children and grandchildren will immediately miss. My condolences to all who knew and loved her. The last we spoke with on a Skype call while I was visiting Andrew in Basel. She was seated beside her husband Dr. Joe. Few couples I have ever known have emitted such grace each time I have spoken with them. And now, they join hands again in a far and lovely place. Rest well dear Susie in the providence of our Heavenly Father.
