We Remember

REDEKOP, David Arnold

January 31, 1943 — March 27, 2017

On March 27, 2017, David Redekop passed away into the loving arms of Jesus at the age of 74 years.   He will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years Marilyn (née Shier); children Colin and Jennifer Reis (David); grandchildren Dominic and Sarah; siblings Cathy Allison, Charlotte Holland (Jim), Marlene Wiens (Bob) and Edward (Marlies); step-siblings Betty Anne Reimer (Peter), Waldo Pauls (Pam), Sharon Channer and Bob Rempel, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law George and Anita Peters, and Bev Shier, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  David was predeceased by his parents David E. and Kay, his stepmother Anne Redekop, step-brother Gerry Channer and step-sister Bonnie Rempel. David was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 31, 1943. He attended high school at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, then went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba with an engineering degree in 1966.  That year, he also married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn.  He managed the family business, Redekop Electric, for many years, then worked for Palliser Furniture as their Property Manager.  David and Marilyn retired to Kelowna in 2005 where they began a new life in the Okanagan. David lived a rich life and pursued diverse interests. He played team sports as a young man, was an active hunter and fisherman for many years, and loved to take long walks.  He logged many miles in the air as a private pilot, flying his Cessna 180 airplane for both family and business trips.  Even with his numerous volunteer commitments, he was a devoted family man who travelled regularly with his family and always had time for them.  He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2008. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate care of the staff of Cottonwoods Care Centre and Kelowna General Hospital 6West during these past months. A celebration of David’s life will be held at the Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road on Saturday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kelowna Gospel Mission. • Adeline Falk-Rafael says:

Marilyn, my heartfelt condolences to you and your children. Also, Kathy, Charlotte, Marlene and Edward, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. It was so good to see David and you, Marilyn, a couple of times after you moved to Kelowna. The last time was a happy event at my late brother’s 75th birthday party. May you find comfort in happy memories and each other.

On behalf of the John and Annie Redekop family (AB ) I am sending our deepest condolences to David’s family and friends. Cathy has so kindly kept me informed of David’s situation throughout the years. As I have been inflicted with this incurable disease for many years, I can understand the suffering David and his family have gone through. It is my prayer that you all are comforted with many good memories of life together with David.

  • Ted and Marilyn Redekop says:

Our deepest condolences to you Marilyn, Colin, Jennifer and extended family. I have many fond memories growing up with David as a similar aged cousin with friendship continuing throughout University days and early professional careers when David would fly his plane up to Thompson, MB where we were living at the time. Our hearts go out to you all.

Our sincere sympathy to you, Marilyn, Collin & Jennifer on the loss of your husband and father. I treasure many fond memories of David, Cathy, Charlotte and Marlene while they were in High School and I had the privilege of staying with you while your parents travelled. Then there were the many years of working together at Camp Arnes, visiting at your cabin plus working with David while he was on the board or various committees. May God’s Peace fill your hearts and home.

  • Dalaine Shier Huber says:

Marilyn our deepest sympathy to you and your family it’s been many years since I’ve seen you. Thank goodness for FB where I have been able to keep in touch with Rita and Marg. Take care.

  • Norm Neufeld says:

Marilyn, Colin and Jennifer, you have our condolences on the passing of David. He came into the family as one who was “bigger than life”, bringing full flavour to the Flatt/Shier family. A float plane (one pontoon leaked) a snowmobile, moose meat, hunting and to a young kid looking up….the best car ever! But his greatest joy came from his steadfast walk with the Lord Jesus and his life partner in you Marilyn…and both “joys” were obvious. Gwen and I often admired your friendship with each other as there was no one that you rather hike or travel with. Praying for you as you press on.

  • Charlotte (Lottie) Redekopp, in Winnipeg says:

Sorry to hear of David’s death in Kelowna. I have tried to contact both Cathy and Charlotte, and left messages for you. Perhaps we can connect later some time.

  • Elizabeth Collins says:

I just talked with Cathy and learned of David’s death. I so enjoyed catching up with you and your family watching the service on the internet. My thoughts are with you as you navigate life moving forward. My husband, Gary, had Parkinson’s as well. He died two years ago.
