We Remember

ROMANCHUK, Nicholas

February 11, 1941 — December 8, 2017

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Romanchuk of Kelowna, British Columbia on December 8, 2017 at the age of 76 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Nick, the youngest of 6 children, was born on February 11, 1941 in Smoky Lake, Alberta to Harry and Dora Romanchuk.

At a young age, Nick moved with his family to the Langley/Cloverdale area of British Columbia where the family operated a small dairy farm. Nick completed his high school education at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Surrey and went on to become an apprentice Airline Maintenance Engineer with Canadian Pacific Airlines before joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1963.  After completing training in Regina, Nick was posted to Swift Current, Saskatchewan where he met Beverley, the love of his life.  They were married in 1966 and had two children, Nick and Laura, while stationed in Morse.  Nick served his entire 33-year career with the RCMP in various communities throughout Saskatchewan before retiring in 1996.  He was an extremely well respected and popular member of the RCMP.  He and Bev fulfilled their lifelong dream when they moved to their newly purchased acreage in Armstrong, British Columbia where they built their retirement home.  Nick spent many hours immaculately maintaining their 10 acres, working in his workshop producing master woodworking projects, and traveling with Bev.  They enjoyed camping, fishing, visiting family, and watching the Blue Jays.  In August 2017 Nick and Bev moved to Kelowna.  He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and was extremely proud of his family.

Nick is survived by Bev, his loving wife of 51 years as well as his son, Nick (Kris) of Kelowna and daughter, Laura (Bruce) of Regina and his four grandchildren: Sydney, McKenna, Gracie, and Graeme. He is also survived by his brothers John of Lacombe and Tom (Carole) of Kamloops as well as his sister, Olga Byrnes of Kelowna along with brothers- and sisters-in-law Joyce (Don) Maloney, Lois Biederbeck, John (Linda) Sharp, Richard (Heather) Sharp, Lorna (Brian) Cave and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nick was predeceased by his parents Harry and Dora Romanchuk, his father- and mother-in law Jack and Pat Sharp, brothers Steve and Mike Romanchuk, as well as brother-in-law Murray Byrnes and sister-in-law Ruth Romanchuk.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ed Hardy, Dr. Simon Baxter, Dr. David Hoegler, Dr. Mary Wall, and particularly Dr. Samantha Reineking as well as the staff at Kelowna General Hospital, the Vernon and Kelowna cancer clinics, and the Central Okanagan Hospice House for the compassionate and expert care given to Nick.

At Nick’s request, there will be no funeral service; however, there will be a celebration of life in Regina in July of 2018 on a date to be determined. Nick’s ashes will be interred at the RCMP Cemetery at Depot Division in Regina.  As an expression of sympathy family and friends may wish to make a memorial donation to the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the Southern Interior at 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 5L1 or www.bccancer.bc.ca .

  • Dan & Nancy Smith says:

    To Bev and the Romanchuk family, relatives and friends;

    It is with sincere sadness that we learn of Nick’s passing. Nancy and I both knew Nick and Bev from our time in Regina, 1990’s. Nick, was the S/Sgt. Detachment Commander, a gentleman, he fully respected and treated everybody fairly. He’d arrive at work always prepared, treating everybody with a smile and a friendly acknowledgement. He had an open door policy providing equal time to employees and public alike to discuss daily occurrences and issues. Over my 35+ year career I have served at numerous postings in several provinces and can honestly say without doubt that Nick, was the best supervisor and colleague I have ever had the pleasure to know and work with. He and Bev, became good friends with Nancy and I. Even after Nick’s retirement in 1996 we remained friends and stayed in touch, occasionally contacting one another via phone over the years. After my retirement in 2012, our contact became less (my fault) and I truly regret not staying in touch over the past few years. I always had intentions to rekindle our old acquaintance and get in touch, I was unaware of Nick’s illness and I waited too long.

    Nancy and I have both Nick and Bev in our thoughts and prayers. We pray for God’s Blessings on Nick and Bev and the family and may my old friend’s soul rest in peace.

    “Death is not extinguishing the light, it is turning down the lamp because the dawn has come. May he eternally rest in the peace, love, joy and mercy of God our Heavenly Father! ”

    We wish to offer our most sincere and heartfelt condolences.

    May God Bless and Keep You All!!…….Dan & Nancy

    Bev and family, I have just learned of Nick’s untimely passing. Over the yeas we new one another through our work and in Regina as nearby neighbours. Nick was a treasure as a person and friend. After you moved to BC from Regina we lost touch but I often thought of Nick. May God Ease the pain of this trying time. God Bless. Wes Cook

  • Dyrril and Sheila Hall says:

    We are saddened to hear of Nick’s passing. Dyrril and Nick had a close working relationship in the Regina area and maintained their friendship throughout their retirement. We always enjoyed our coffee stops and visits in Armstrong area and this area which was a camping stop for Nick and Bev. Our hearts go out to Bev and family. We will miss him.
