We Remember

SEAMAN, Carolina (Carrie) Kemp Cosh

March 19, 1922 — August 5, 2016

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother at the age of 94 at the Kelowna General Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in 1922 in Port William, Scotland to Robert (Bob) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Birch. The family emigrated to Canada in 1927 under the Soldier Settlement Board Farm Program. They first settled north of Minitonas , Manitoba and, in 1935 moved northeast of Minitonas to the Duncanville district.

In 1940 Mom married Geordie Hodgson and they took up farming in the Oakhurst district. In 1955, following two crop failures and Dad’s illness, they moved into Minitonas where she was employed at the Minitonas Locker Plant. Following that she worked as an Egg Grader at the Egg Grading Station.

In 1960 they moved to Swan River where she worked in the meat department of the Swan Valley Co-op. After Dad’s passing in 1962 she continued working at the Co-op.

In 1967 a mutual friend introduced her to Bert Seaman. Following their marriage in 1968 they moved to Flin Flon where Bert was employed at Modern Dairies. Mom worked at the Co-op, and then worked as Head Cook at the Manor.

When the Dairy was destroyed by fire they moved to The Pas where Bert continued to work for Modern Dairies and Carrie managed the apartment block they lived in.

In 1980 they retired to Westbank, B.C. Following Bert’s passing in 1994, she moved to Linden Estates where she resided until 2015. Then due to failing health, she moved into The Heritage.

Mom’s forte was community service and being an organizer. She helped form a small Credit Union and a Square Dance group in Minitonas. In Westbank she was involved in square dancing and the Westbank Senior’s Group, where she served as President, and arranged countless Bus Tours and Cruises for seniors.

Carrie was predeceased by her husbands Geordie (1962) and Bert (1994), her parent’s Bob (1979) and Lizzie Birch (1989) and her son-in-law Dave Bodnarchuk (1999)

Carrie is survived by her son Ron Hodgson (Grace), daughter Joyce Feist (Richard), grandsons Ronald Hodgson Jr., Robert Hodgson (Shawna Janvier), Chris Bodnarchuk, Jason Bodnarchuk (Kira) and great grandsons Andrew Hodgson and Julian Bodnarchuk, along with several cousins in Scotland.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Heritage and the doctors and nurses at the Kelowna General Hospital for their kindness and compassion. Special thanks to Jeff and Veronica Barrett for their kindness and help. Also thanks to Malcolm Sutherland and Howard Braun for being there when we couldn’t.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held in the Westbank United Church on September 29, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. with a Reception to follow.

A private family Internment of Ashes will be held in Swan River, Manitoba, rejoining Carrie with Geordie and Bert.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”
