We Remember

SHOEMAKER, Ray

April 2, 1937 — May 9, 2017

Went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at the age of 80.  Survived by his loving wife Barbara of 55 years, daughters Judy (John) McGowan of Mission, BC; Lori (Lonnie) Burma of Kelowna;  Brenda (Keith) Gotte of Kelowna; grandchildren Michael and David McGowan, Jessica and Joel Burma, Emily, Ben, and Solomon Gotte; sisters Eileen Habermehl of Elmira, ON, Vera Shoemaker of Belwood, ON and Eva Schell of Elmira, ON; brothers Glen (Joan) of Fairview, AB, Lyal (Berna) and Lorne (Donna), both of Kelowna and Stuart (Yvona) of Kenilworth, ON; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother Clare and sister Fern.

Ray was born April 2, 1937 in Elora, Ontario.  In 1956, while reading the paper, Ray saw the caption, “Go West, Young Man, Go West,” and so, he did, eventually settling in Calgary, AB where he met and married the love of his life, Barbara.  In 1966, they moved their family to Kelowna and quickly became involved in their community.  Ray enjoyed a career in construction, development and real estate.  He was actively committed to his church community and, most recently, Freedom’s Door.

Ray was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandpa/poppie.  He will be remembered for his kind heart, his gentle spirit, his quick wit and his LOVE of singing.  Ray’s family would like to thank the dedicated staff of Spring Valley Care Centre and Glenmore Lodge for their endless care and support.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  (2 Tim 4:7)

I have fond memories of Ray Lyle and Glen from when they came to our farm to finish the stooking. I was 6 or 7 years old. They found my efforts to help amusing. LOL. Clare Lorne and Stuart were life long friends. Clare delayed his move to the west just long enough to be my best man for my wedding. Also I remember Fern, from my Sunday school class .I missed her for a long time because I was reminded every week when I cut the grass in the cemetery on our farm Thanks for the memories they are all good !
