SMITH, Joyce Luise (nee Walker)

Joyce Smith, resident of Kelowna BC, passed away on January 3, 2018 at the age of 80 years. Born in Dixon Illinois, daughter of Rosemary and Wilson Walker, Joyce grew up in Illinois and went to College at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, majoring in languages and earning her teaching degree. They wed in 1961 in Quito, Ecuador and spent the ensuing years in Central America, establishing a young family before re-settling in British Columbia in 1968. Their life together took the family to many towns in BC, including Burnaby, North Delta, Kimberley, Kamloops, Terrace and Port Moody before settling in Kelowna during their retirement years.

Joyce had many interests including skiing (both downhill and cross country), hiking, bridge, and golf. Joyce took great pride in her family which included three kids, seven grandchildren, and a great grandchild.

Joyce will be sadly missed by daughters Megan (Smaha) and Jennifer (MacDonald), son Ian, sister Jeanne Cobb, brother John Walker, sister-in-law Jean Walker, 7 grandchildren (Lindsay, Sarah, Courtney, Katie, Chrissy, Laura and Kevin), great grandchild, Andrea, and extended family and friends. Condolences

  • Lisa Zaza says:

Aunty Joyce and Uncle Gord opened their home on several occasions as we travelled through Port Moody. A day at the race track, libations in the living room, a wonderful dinner, great conversation, whimsical stories . . . so many reasons to miss this warm, witty, wonderful lady.

  • Linda & Peter Caverhill says:

We knew Joyce and Gordon for about 14 years, when they were our next-door neighbours on Cypress Place in Port Moody. They became friends, and we would look after each others’ mail and plants in each others’ absence. After learning about Joyce from the ‘Sun’ newspaper, we informed some of the neighbours on our cul-de-sac, and several expressed memories of her and Gordon. We are sorry to hear of Joyce’s passing, and wish the best for her family.

  • Mike and Inge Andrews says:

We would like to send our condolences to the family.
For many years, Joyce and I were very good friends in Terrace. We down hill and cross country skied together, went on hikes, enjoyed the local Hot Springs and had interesting chats over coffee. After Joyce and Gordon moved to Port Moody and we relocated to White Rock, Joyce and I continued our friendship and together with Gordon and my husband Michael, met many times for walks on the Promenade or in Port Moody, followed by lively discussions over a meal. We will always cherish these memories. Thank you Joyce and Gordon.
Our best wishes to the family.

Michael and Inge Andrews, White Rock
