We Remember

SMITH, Robert Gordon Nicolson “Gordon”

Gordon Smith, resident of Kelowna BC, passed away on November 4, 2016 at the age of 78 years. Born in Rossland BC, son of Jessie and Thomas Smith, Gordon moved to Victoria after high school and soon began a long career with the Bank of Montreal. Gordon took an opportunity to pursue his career internationally and met the love of his life, Joyce Walker of Dixon Illinois, in El Salvador in 1959. They wed in 1961 in Quito, Ecuador and spent the ensuing years in Central America, establishing a young family before re-settling in British Columbia in 1968. Gordon spent the rest of his career in BC, residing in Burnaby, North Delta, Kimberley, Kamloops, Terrace and Port Moody before settling in Kelowna during his retirement years.

Gordon was a proud supporter of Rotary and had a strong sense of community. He was an avid reader, loved playing bridge and snooker, and enjoyed river fishing. Gordons’ quick wit and sense of humor were appreciated by many. Gordon made many life-long friends and he always held them in high regard, no matter how far away they may be.

Gordon will be sadly missed by his wife Joyce, daughters Megan (Smaha) and Jennifer (MacDonald), son Ian, sister Ellen (Biggs), 7 grandchildren (Lindsay, Sarah, Courtney, Katie, Chrissy, Laura and Kevin) and extended family and friends. He was pre-deceased by his parents, sister Joan (Mahr) and brother Tom.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, February 11th, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Springfield Funeral Home Family Centre, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. An Open House will follow, hosted by the Smaha family at 1563 Longley Crescent, Kelowna (RSVP appreciated).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society of BC.

Condolences

  • Lisa Zaza says:

A life well-lived by a man sorely missed. Over the years, Uncle Gord has advised me on finances, books, wines, art and the best way to eat sardines. He was dedicated to his family, most especially his beautiful wife, and I have so many happy memories of visiting or being visited by the Smith family from Delta to Kelowna. My heartfelt condolences on the loss of this beloved man.

  • Peter and Linda Caverhill says:

We were neighbours of Gordon & Joyce for many years, and feel very sorry to lose an old friend. We are at 1203 Cypress Place, Port Moody, and often checked each others’ houses during vacation times. Our condolences go out to the family.

  • Heather Caldwell says:

Was so sorry to hear of Gordon’s passing. Have enjoyed hearing about him over the years, despite our miles. The end of life is so sore to witness. Feeling for you all. Filled May Forrester’s (my gran) wedding vase with beautiful roses. Love from Glasgow. Heather xx

  • John and Jean Chapman says:

We were sorry to hear of Gordon’s passing last November. Although we are not able to be at the memorial we will be remembering the good times the family had together. We will be there in spirit and also thinking of the times we had with Gordon and Joyce in the past.
