We Remember

STANFORD, Dana Martha (nee Michalak)

Passed away peacefully on June 6, 2016 in her 95th year at The Village at Mill Creek in Kelowna. Predeceased by Joseph Stanford (April 23, 2012), her husband of 63 years. Mother of Mark Christopher Stanford and John Robert Stanford, and mother-in-law of Meredith Maclean Stanford. Aunt of Jolanta Gabrysiak, Danuta Mirowska, Barbara Pates, John Michalak, Julia Booth, Leslie Michalak, Richard Michalak and Henry Michalak. Born in Krasnystaw, Poland on January 30, 1921, Dana was the eldest child of Maria and Victor Michalak. Dana served in the Second World War with allied forces and rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After the war, Dana attended university in London, England where she met and fell in love with her husband, Joseph. They married on August 12, 1949 and came to Canada in 1952.  Dana continued her post-graduate education at the University of Toronto, receiving her master’s degree in chemical engineering. She lectured at U of T for several years and after taking time to raise a family, Dana was employed as a high school teacher for 25 years at Richview Collegiate. After her retirement, Dana and Joseph moved to Kelowna in 1989. Dana will be remembered for her love of languages (she spoke six), tennis, swimming, bridge and animals. Private cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dana’s life will be held at Springfield Funeral Home in Kelowna, B.C. on Monday June 27 at 10:00 a.m. Donations in memory of Dana can be made to the British Columbia SPCA.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”
