We Remember

STEPHENSON, Margaret Caroline

Passed away peacefully at Kelowna General Hospital on July 20, 2015 at the age of 90. Margaret was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. In 1947 she graduated from the University of Toronto, where she had majored in English Literature. Having obtained her teaching certificate, Margaret then accepted a position at the high school in Omemee, Ontario. While in Omemee, she met her future husband, George Stephenson (1915-2005) who, together with his brothers, operated Stephenson’s Feed Mill. Married in 1950, Margaret and George had five children, raising them in Omemee, Peterborough and Haliburton, Ontario. During their time in Peterborough, Margaret acted as a supply teacher, eventually teaching English and French part-time. In later years, she became a full-time English teacher at North Hastings High School in Bancroft, Ontario. In retirement, Margaret and George enjoyed travelling across Canada as well as living in communities from Nova Scotia to BC. For a time they also operated a Bed & Breakfast close to their beloved Algonquin Park. Ultimately, they ended up summering in Dorset, Ont. and wintering in the Okanagan Valley, where Margaret developed a great fondness for Peachland in particular.

Over the years, she enjoyed volunteering; singing in church choirs in both Dorset and in Peachland; swimming; line dancing (especially with the “Stanhope Steppers”) and performing with the Variety Singers of Peachland. With her strong faith, she was an inspiration to others, and brought joy and laughter to all who knew her.

At her most recent home, Lakeview Lodge, she was said to cast a bright light among residents and staff alike. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the many people who cared for and loved Mom in her final home, as well as a special note of thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Kelowna General Hospital.

She is sadly mourned by her five children, Frederick of Haliburton, ON, Helen (Don) of Westbank, BC, Ruth of Boshkung Lake, ON, Douglas (Joann) of Manotick, ON, Jennifer of Peachland, BC. She will also be greatly missed by her three grandchildren Grace, Cosette, and Eve and step grandchildren Kevin and Kyle. Sister of the late Kenneth Dunn, fondly remembered by his children and treasured by sister-in-law Betty Stephenson and her children as well as many other family members and friends. She was considered to be a wonderful mother and the best mother-in-law there could be.

Friends are invited to share memories and celebrate Margaret’s life at Peachland United Church, BC, Friday July 24 at 2:00 PM.
