SUTHERLAND, Doug

July 14, 1924 — February 4, 2017

A Celebration of Life will be held for Doug Sutherland on Saturday July 15, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.

Dad was born in Kelowna on July 14, 1924 and passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on February 4, 2017 at the age of 92 years. He is survived by his son Cameron (Marilyn), daughter Christine (Chris), grandchildren Tyler (Leanne) and Kim (Derek), sister Jean, brother Kenneth, and by his partner Alice Lundy.

Doug was predeceased by his wife Mary in 1992.

At Dad’s request, a family interment was held at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dad joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 and returned to Kelowna in 1946 where he apprenticed as a baker with his grandmother at Sutherland’s bakery.

He married Mary Day in August 1949 and that December they purchased the Royal Bakery and worked together until they sold in 1976, after which Dad worked in local bakeries for a few more years.

In 1953 Dad joined the Kelowna Lions Club and remained a member until his death. He was president numerous times and also took on more extensive duties as Zone Chairman and District Governor.

Dad loved to ski; as a young man he spent many hours at Black Mountain and later taught his kids to enjoy skiing at Silver Star and Big White.

He was a charter member of the Kelowna Power Squadron and Commodore of the Yacht Club.

Many of the neighborhood kids and friends learned to water ski behind his boat with the help of Mom in the water. Most Sundays were spent at “The Farm” skiing, swimming and enjoying a cold one.

Dad could also be found up at Beaver Lake, either fishing or working on the “Dunmovin” cabin.

In 2013 Dad and Alice moved to the Northwood Retirement Resort, where he enjoyed his final years.
