TAYLOR, Ian Barry

June 3, 1930 — April 12, 2017

Ian went to be with the Lord on April 12th at the age of 86 surrounded by family members.  He was survived by Tina, his wife of 67 years.  He is also survived by: daughters: Maureen (Ronald) Jonson (Surrey BC); Cynthia Taylor (Montreal QC); sons: Barry (Victoria BC), Lawrence (Vancouver BC), Gregory (Kelowna BC); grandchildren: Brian Jonson (Maya) (Surrey BC), Christina Ingwersen (Jeff) (Langley BC); great grandchildren:  Mitchell, Malcolm and Maria Jonson; Carter, Seth and Jasper Ingwersen; sister:  Maureen Teminsky (Calgary, AB); brother: Brian Taylor (Winnipeg, MB); as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.  Born and raised in the St. James district of Winnipeg, Ian went west to Chilliwack as a young man, working in the logging industry.  He met his wife Tina there in 1948, marrying in 1949 with the first child born the following year.  In 1951, he joined Canadian National Railways and the young family moved to Vancouver.  The family grew to five children and subsequently moved again to Kelowna in 1964, where he retired after 37 years of service.  Ian loved life and lived it to the fullest.  He was an active member of First Baptist Church and involved in many children’s and young people’s summer camping programs.  A sports and fitness enthusiast, he led men’s fitness programs, noon hour hockey and senior skating programs through Parkinson Recreation Centre as well as many years with the Cobras Oldtimers Hockey Club.  Weightlifting and running were also his passions, doing many races including the 1986 Vancouver International Marathon.  Ian also spent many years square dancing with the Westsyde Squares Square Dance Club. In younger days, holidays usually meant camping with the family and after retirement ventured further afar, which included several cruises.  Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Village at Smith Creek and Village at Mill Creek for their compassion and care for almost 4 years.  Thanks also to Dr. V. Suciu during these difficult years with dementia.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 22nd at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 1309 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna, BC.   In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. 307 – 1664 Richter Street Kelowna, B.C.
