We Remember

TRAUB, Edward Lavern

March 29, 2024 — March 29, 2024

Our wonderful dad and grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend, Edward Lavern Traub passed away suddenly on November 10, 2016 at the age of 80.

While we were not ready to say goodbye, God said, “Attention, please,” the steersperson called “All down” and Lavern “Checked his boat.” Lavern finished his race, winning another first. He is waiting for us on the other side of the lake.

Mourning Lavern’s passing are his wife Doreen, his loving and faithful companion for 58 years, son, Cam (Heather) Traub; daughters Patti (Dean) Sader; Melonie Traub; and Marilyn (Al) Janzen.

Lavern loved spending time with his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Chantel (Mark) Quiring, Elizabeth Traub (Alonso Olaya), and Chyenne Traub (Andrew Shymka); Jon Sader, James Sader and Jill Sader; Dylan Morris and Spencer Morris; Jessica Janzen, Danielle Janzen and Mariah Janzen, and great-granddaughter Ainsley Janzen and one great-grandson soon to be born. They have fond memories of playing games, gardening, building puzzles, picking fruit, baking, hiking. Lavern enjoyed the company of his many nieces and nephews, and happily hosted those who stopped in on their travels. He was famous for his waffle breakfasts.

Lavern’s values and strengths were an inspiration for his family and friends. At 80, dad was still working with his friend Terry with his landscaping and pruning.

Lavern was an active, vital man to his last moment, having just finished a landscaping gig with Terry when he left us. In summer, Lavern spent many happy hours nurturing his own garden—and those of everyone he visited!—preserving its bounty; and of course, dragon boating. In winter while the garden slept, Lavern turned his energy to curling, reading, watching sports, and building puzzles, baking cookies and pies, and painting with oils and painting ceramics.

Lavern demonstrated love and devotion to Doreen, visiting her everyday at her home, and providing for her up until his last day. He would bring Doreen and three other ladies from the care home to Paynter’s every Sunday for ice cream.

Lavern loved God and faithfully served his church Powers Creek Community Church in Westbank. Lavern played the piano, picked and arranged flowers for the sanctuary, and was a champion breakfast chef for the Saturday morning men’s breakfast group.

Lavern was an amazing father, father-in-law, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend whose gentle and loving presence will be missed by us all.

Lavern’s family wishes to acknowledge his good friend Terry Forestell for caring for him at his passing.

Condolences

  • Joy Oxenham says:

I wish to express the family my heartfelt sympathy. This is such a difficult time but we do have the blessed promise that we will meet again in Heaven. He is so missed already as in his lifetime his many, many talents were shared with so many. I’ve known Lavern for 58 years and really did appreciate his gifts. My prayers are with you all and I trust that God will comfort you and sustain you in days ahead. An old friend–Joy Oxenham

  • Joan (Leeson) Kirkbride says:

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. We were neighbors growing up in Didsbury and your Dad taught my siblings and I piano lessons for years. I even babysat you on occasion. We lived directly behind you. My Mom was a wonderful pianist/organist as well and I know, aside from being great neighbors, my Mom and your Dad worked on many musical things together too.
After we moved to Kelowna years ago, we would visit your Mom and Dad whenever Mom came out to visit us.
Our families go back many many years, my Dad went to school in the 1920s with your uncles/ great uncles/ grandparents. He used to tell the story of passing a note to Ozro Traub to ask if he knew if Lindberg made it, referring to the first Transatlantic flight.
Just some thoughts today. Your Dad (and Mom) touched many lives.
My deepest sympathy to you all.
    Joan (Leeson) Kirkbride, Kelowna

  • Marilyn. Feeg says:

I took piano lessons from Lavern, & was entered in competitions in Calgary, until I completed Grade 8 Piano. I just wish I could have played 1960’s Rock ‘n Roll, instead of Royal Conservatory Classical, & I would have enjoyed piano lessons more! Years after I quit piano lessons, I heard thru the grapevine, that Lavern said I was his 2nd best student, next to Howard Jansen! I was surprised, & wish he had told when I was younger. But it seems people did Not compliment much then, to prevent someone from having pride. But with the many hurts in my life, I really needed some praise. Perhaps this note will speak to you to say something positive to anyone, as often as you can.

  • Ursula Brant says:

My deepest Sympathy to Laverne’s Family! He was a very special Person; Always cheerful and smiling and talented in sooo many ways! Laverne has trimmed my Cedar hedge and Cedar trees for over 15 years! He was such a pleasure to have and we had some nice conversations and laughs while he worked. I will miss him! May his family find comfort in knowing he is with his Lord and Saviour! Ursula Brant

  • Meredith Knodel says:

I was saddened to hear of Lavern’s passing. He was a kind and patient piano teacher and a loving and devoted father. I have many, many fond memories of time spent with your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  • Jan and Bob Jones says:

Lavern and Terry were so helpful when we needed to remove dead cedars and have other yard work done both where we live now in Sandstone and at our previous home in the Upper Mission. Lavern was a quiet, true gentleman. The Celebration of Lavern’s Life was wonderful. We had no idea that he was so gifted in so many ways and freely gave so much of his time to help others. We are comforted by the fact that he is now with his Lord and Saviour.
