We Remember

WAIT, Muriel

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Muriel on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at the age of 87.

She was born in Calgary and raised in Blairmore, Alberta. Muriel married the love of her life George in 1953 and together they raised four children in Blairmore. In 1973 they relocated to Fort Nelson when George was transferred with Westcoast Transmission. During her time in Fort Nelson she made many friends while working with the Hudson’s Bay Company. George and Muriel retired to Winfield BC in 1989.
Muriel is predeceased by her husband George, brothers Ronald Fyfe, Douglas Oliver and Kenneth Oliver. She is survived by her sister Kathleen (Bob) Doren; four children: Kevin, Heather (Phil) Stirton, Laurie, Darren (Karolyn); three grandchildren: Daniel Stirton, Shawn Wait and Bryann Leader (Julian) and four great-grandchildren: Darien, Kalysten, Dawson and Jaymin as well as many nieces and nephews.

Muriel loved road trips to visit family in Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Prince George and Cobble Hill, BC. She would often go for an extended stay in each of these places, calling each place home.
Muriel will be remembered for her positive attitude and cheerful optimism. She was always generous and ready to entertain visitors. Muriel was involved with the Daughters of the Nile in Kelowna and enjoyed getting together with the ladies.
Muriel loved to knit, do crosswords, word searches and card games. Later in life she had difficulty with her eyesight which precluded her doing some of these hobbies.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home Family Centre, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.

  • Patti McBride says:

While visiting Fort St John from my home in Tucson, Arizona, I have fond memories of Muriel when we were “housemates” staying the same week at the home of my youngest sister Karolyn and hubby Darren. During the day Muriel and I had the house to ourselves. We had the best time getting to know each other; chatting and swapping stories, etc. Every time I would go downstairs to sing and play Karolyn’s piano (which could be hours), Muriel would come down and bring her knitting . There she would sit, knitting away and listening for as long as I was there. She was the best audience! (I can almost remember her favorite song.) She was a great lady and will be missed by the many that loved her…

    • The Wait Family says:

Thank you Patti for sharing your memories of Mom. One of Mom’s favorite songs was Amazing Grace and we are sure you played it for her with your amazing voice and talent. Best wishes from all of us.

  • Polly Marasco says:

I have many wonderful memories of growing up in Blairmore with Muriel. I still remember the dance by the lake where she met her love, George. She was always a kind and caring friend. I enjoyed visiting her home and talking with her in our golden years, as well. May you find peace in your loving memories of your mother, a beautiful person inside and out.

    • The Wait Family says:

Our family and friends took us to Montana’s to celebrate my birthday and Laurie and Murial happened to be there too. We ended up joining tables and had a fun night celebrating our mutual birth dates. What a fun night and great memory of Murial.

  • Andrea Spencer says:

Dear Laurie, Heather, Kevin, Darren and extended family, your Mom was a gem and she will continue to sparkle in each and every one of the lives she touched. The Muriel I got to know always had a smile and always greeted me with affection. The family is a testament to the loving mother, grandmother, sister she was….always there for her and one another. With much love, Andrea

Kevin, Heather, Laurie and Darren, I was so saddened to hear of your mom’s passing. I was just thinking about her on the 26th as she shared a birthday with my mom.
