WALKER, James Stewart “Jimmy”

Jimmy died peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Hospice House at the age of 96. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC with Clair Jantzen officiating.  A private family interment will take place prior to the service.

He was born on November 9, 1919 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to James Stewart and Mary Ann (Muir) Walker. He graduated from Daniel McIntyre High School in 1936.  On October 25, 1941 he married Dorothy May Taylor in Transcona, Manitoba.

Jimmy was employed in a number of mines in Canada (Pickle Crow, Uchi Lake, Britannia Beach, Red Lake and Snow Lake) and overseas on the island of Cyprus, where he remained until his retirement in 1975.

Our Great Grandpa was an avid sportsman excelling at every sport he attempted including tennis, bowling, softball, curling and golf. He also enjoyed reading, gardening, bridge and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Jimmy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and a friend to all.  He will be fondly remembered.

Jimmy is survived by his family: son Greg (Dawn) Walker, 2 grandchildren, Erin (Owen) Goward and Stewart (Tobi) Walker as well as 9 great grandchildren: Simeon Goward, Jacob Walker, Judah Goward, Isaiah Walker, Olivia Goward, Magdalene Goward, Jonas Walker, Zaria Goward and Isla Walker. Predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 1998 and his siblings Frankie Smith, May Cleaver, Tom Walker and George Walker.

A special thank you to the staff of the Dorchester Retirement Village, Interior Health Community Care team of nurses and care aides as well as Dr. Whiting and the staff of the Hospice House for their loving care and support.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation – Community Care, 2268 Pandosy Street, Kelowna, BC  V1Y 1T2.
