We Remember

WIENS, Daniel

July 19, 1924 — October 10, 2018

Our loving father Daniel Wiens passed peacefully to be with his Lord and Saviour on October 10, 2018. He was born in Karlovka, Russia on July 19, 1924. At the age of 1 he and his family came to Canada and farmed in a Mennonite community in Southern Alberta.

He loved to tell stories of his boyhood days on the farm and the hardships of the Great Depression of the 30’s. Dan attended Menno Bible Institute near Didsbury in the late 40’s and there he received a Sunday School Teacher’s Diploma.

In 1949 Dan met his wife Helen and they married and moved to Kelowna to start a life together and raise their

family. Dan was a founding member of the Kelowna Gospel Fellowship Church where he and Helen were active members for over 50 years. He loved to fly remote controlled model airplanes with the Ogopogo Flying Club in the 70’s.

Dan was known by many as “Dan the TV Man” as he ran a successful TV repair business in the 60’s and 70’s. His VW van with the banner “Dan’s TV Service” was a familiar sight. He was also part of the crew that set up a tower on Black Mountain in the late 50’s, bringing cable television to Kelowna for the first time.

He had a huge passion for music, especially the harmonica. As a young boy he was taught to play by his father, and it became a lifetime of playing with many music groups, the latest being the Golden Nuggets, visiting Seniors Homes throughout Kelowna for many years.

Dan loved his family and had a big heart for everyone he met. He was very social and loved to connect with people, share a joke and have some coffee.

Dan is survived by 5 children: Adena (Jake), Bette (Michael), Lory, Vivian (Kyle) and Richard; son-in-law Don; 6 grandchildren: Vickie (Scott) Bekker, Randall (Leanne) Schellenberg, Jason (Crystal) Schellenberg, Jennifer Humphries, Alexandra (Chris) Collins and Anika Friesen; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife Helen of 61 years, and his daughter Frieda.

The family would like to thank the staff at Village at Smith Creek – Paynter Unit, where Dan resided for almost 2 years. Also, a big thank you to Dr. Dean Griswold, whom Dan counted as a friend for all his years of excellent care.

Dear cousins, I am sorry for the loss of your precious Dad. I always admired Uncle Dan, he made me laugh with his fast talk and jokes. Our two families spent lots of time together especially when Vivian, myself and Jamie and Rick were young and I have wonderful memories of our travel trailer trips together In the 70’s. May you all hold your precious memories and each other close through this difficult time.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dan was a special soul. I was lucky enough to go to the same church as Dan and got to experience his wonderful harmonica playing.
