We Remember

WIRCH, Violet Elsie

Violet Elsie Zimmer was born March 13, 1933 in St. Boniface, Manitoba.  She was the 8th child her parents George and Bertha Zimmer welcomed into this world.  Five more siblings arrived after her, taking the total to 13.  At the age of 3, Violet and her family moved to Sprague, Manitoba, where she lived until the age of 10.  Then the family took the train west and arrived in Vancouver, BC.

Violet lived in Vancouver for the rest of her childhood.  At the age of 16, she left home and returned to Winnipeg.  She lived with an aunt and uncle and soon became best friends with her cousin Elly.  She worked at Eaton’s Department Store in downtown Winnipeg and began attending McDermot Avenue Baptist Church.  It was during this time that she became a Christian and turned her life over to God.

Violet met Henry Wirch in August of 1950 in Youth Group at McDermott.  They began dating that Christmas and were married on October 20, 1951.  Shortly after the wedding, they moved to Toronto, Ontario where they lived for 6 months; then moved back to Winnipeg, as both were very homesick and missed being around family.

During the next 9 years they had 5 children: Donald, Janet, Craig, Carolyn and Darlene.  In July 1966, Henry and Violet packed up the house and family and moved them west, back to BC.

They became charter members of a church plant, Sunshine Ridge Baptist Church, which began in 1968 with a service in a North Delta school gymnasium.  Violet taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Secretary for many years.  She sang in the choir and helped out in the church kitchen whenever it was needed.

Thanks to her mother-in–law who taught her how to cook and bake, Violet had a reputation for making delicious food.  Her pea soup was the best ever.  And her Christmas baking was legendary amongst family and friends.  In 1984 the grandchildren started arriving, nine in all – 4 boys and 5 girls.  Violet was quite excited to become a grandma.  In August of 2000, Henry and Violet said goodbye to their home in North Delta where they had lived for almost 34 years and moved to Kelowna to be closer to family.   It also moved them closer to friends they had known since their Winnipeg days.   They transferred their church membership to the Grace Baptist Church.

And then, Saturday, October 7, 2017, Violet went to be with her Lord and Saviour.  She lived a full life and loved with all her heart.  She was blessed with family and friends who loved on her and appreciated her for her blessing on their lives.

Violet is predeceased by her husband Henry (January 2010) and daughter Janet (July 2011).

She is remembered by her sisters Helen, Freda and Eleanor and brother Leo; her sister-in-law Edna; her children Donald and wife Monica; her son-in law Alex; her son Craig and wife Barbara; her daughter Carolyn and husband Henry and her daughter Darlene.  She also leaves behind cousins and many nieces and nephews.

She will live on in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tyson, his wife Christina and their two sons, Isaiah and Troy; Alicia, her husband Fernando and their sons Christopher and Nico and daughter Mia; Nathan; Karissa, her husband Brandt; Tim his wife Sheri; Jordan, his wife Amanda; Katrina, husband Lucas and their son Gideon and four daughters Ariella, Elora, Adaya and Eden; Kimberley, her husband Jon; and Becky, her husband Nick.

Violet is in heaven today, having a great reunion with her husband Henry, her daughter Janet, many of her siblings and other loved ones.  Her children and grandchildren share the faith passed down from generation to generation, that someday, we will all be together again.

The best is yet to come.

The family would like to thank Dr. Thompson for her excellent care and support, as well as the nurses, care workers and staff on Peach Trail at Brandt’s Creek Mews for the wonderful love and care they have given Violet since July of 2010. You put smiles on her face daily and were there for her when family couldn’t be. She was truly blessed to be in your capable hands and we are very grateful to each and every one of you.
