After struggling with health issues, David passed away quietly on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the age of 83. Survived by his sons: David (Aline) of St. Albert, AB, Colin of Kelowna; daughters: Myung Randall of Kelowna, Noreen deBourcier of Jindabyne, Australia; grandchildren: Olivia, Scott and Luke deBourcier, Monika and Makayla Randall, Akira, Scout and Indiah-Lou Nunan; his brother John, sister José Pereña Pratt (Barney) both of Victoria, his nieces Jochelle Pereña (Brian Quakenbush), Jemma Pereña, great niece Luna. David immigrated from the Channel Islands with his parents in 1953. He was a career Pharmacist, opening the first Shoppers Drug Mart in Orchard Park Mall, later moving to Rutland Western Drug Mart (Pharmasave). A time of visitation will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a funeral service to follow on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 9:30 am both at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. Interment to follow in Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central Okanagan Hospice Association – Hospice House, 2035 Ethel Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 2Z6.     My cousin, Dave – someone I admired and will miss.

    I first met Dave when his family emigrated from Jersey & came to live with us for 3 months in Victoria. Don’t know how we managed in a 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom house, but we did! Because they had been deprived of much during the WW2 occupation, Dave relished the food that was available in Canada. How well I remember – “Any more spuds?” – and the potato pot would be cleaned out!

    Dave was very industrious. He had brought his bike from Jersey and was able to ride wherever he needed to be. He was soon employed by Darling’s Pharmacy in Victoria and perhaps this prompted him to go back to school, and eventually receive his degree in Pharmacy. Both he & I attended Vic College (1954-55) and were in the same English Lit class. I was relieved when the Prof would ask Dave a question (and not me!). He always had a thoughtful answer.

    Although we have never lived in the same city, we have always kept in touch over the years. After being such an active athletic young man, it seemed so sad when he developed many joint problems and was not able to take part in the sports he loved.

    We will miss you, Dave.

    My sincere condolences to all of Dave’s family and friends. Dave hired me in his Shoppers Drug Mart store. What an exciting time! It felt like all of Kelowna came through the store on that first day! Dave was a wonderful boss, so very kind and patient. I was thrown a wedding shower in the staff room and Dave and staff all came to my wedding.
    I was very saddened to hear of his passing. The world was a better place with him in it.

    My memories are of David his parents brother and sister. We were so sad when they decided to go to Canada. But though far away we still heard from them and from time to time they visited. David and John came back for the 50th Anniversary of our liberation, and we certainly had a fun time attending the re-enacting ceremony and attending a function or two where we could reminisce with others who had lived in teh village during the occupation. David remember so much.

    One visit he came on his own for two weeks and researched the de Bourcier family tree. my brother Michael reminisced with me how infectious David’s stories were of our ancestors, and what a success his family tree has been for all of us. David stayed with us and we were so pleased to be caught up with the excitment as he revealed all he had learned each day, in a Parish Church, Societe Jersaise and the local archives.

    Two young men on Box Hill, Surrey, a while ago… and I still wear gloves for driving!
    In later life, we had some very close times of sharing personal and spiritual things and praying together, and so I feel his loss more than might be expected.

    I have many happy memories of Dave and Olive – When they stayed with us in our home in Fetcham (he always said he felt safe on the roads over here if he kept the white line on his right!) and we enjoyed their hospitality in Kelona, Dave always found us interesting and exciting places to visit. I send my sympathy to all the family.

    Thanks to Chuck and Betty Kuhn for forwarding the memorial note We were all UBC classmates and David and I roomed together in one of the more palatial huts at Acadia Camp in 1957. Sketch coming later! We never heard Dave sing anything, let alone “In An English Country Garden”. He did sing the praises of Olive all of 1957! In fact when Chuck, Leroy Fevang, and Al Simon (another classmate) and I planned a weekend out on the town David would always say he had to bicycle to see Olive. He was a bit irritating when it came to Olive and declined to go out with “the boys”. However the memorial service really indicated he had made an excellent choice for a lifetime mate and raised a wonderful family. We did drag David out one night for one of our most memorable evenings. In the dark of the night we “borrowed” a rather long ladder and carried it from Acadia Camp to one of the frat houses. There we planted it against the wall and gained access to the rooftop, then ventured to the front of the house and removed the frat flag. Without disturbing the frat boys we reached the ground safely and took the flag to the campus center, wrote a note saying this was done by the Egyptian god of pharmacy, Anepu, and ran the note and the flag up the pole. It was discovered the next morning and to this day no one ever found out who did this foul deed. What would we ever have done without this lad from the Channel Islands! We all parted after graduation but I am so very thankful that the family did such a wonderful job in memorializing David. Thank you all very much

    Greetings to the family!

    We are thankful for the notification of David’s death and for the posting of the video of his funeral. It was as though we were there with you — in your grief and in the sharing of so many wonderful memories. Coming from Victoria, we shared that common bond with David, as well as being classmates. After graduation, we all went our separate ways, and I only saw Dave a couple of times since. However, the video gave us an insite into his life and family and we now have a much better understanding of what we have missed.

    Our prayers go out to all the family during this difficult time but we are sure your memories of all the good times you have shared will help ease the pain.
