DOW, Dalton George (Bud)

Born May 14, 1931 in Quincy, Massachusetts and passed away on October 2, 2014 at the Kelowna General Hospital. He will be missed and fondly remembered for his kind, gregarious and outgoing spirit by his circle of friends, neighbours and extended family.
Dalton was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Elizabeth Dow (Sawyer) in 2002 and Rena Dow (Titmus) in 2011; also predeceased by his parents Russell and Vera Dow.
Dalton graduated from Chipman, NB High School in 1948, completing his education at the University of New Brunswick, graduating with a Professional Engineer degree. He had a working career spanning the world in doing Engineering work assignments, consulting on various rail and transportation projects; which included a 20 year employment with Canadian Pacific in an engineering capacity.
Dalton’s travels took him to China, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Southeast Asia locations, Argentina as well as a career spent working both in Canada and the United. States. Prior to moving to Kelowna in 2002, Dalton and Margaret lived in Collegeville, PA. Unfortunately Margaret passed away and the retirement plans for Kelowna ended with Dalton living on his own in Kelowna.
His accomplishments are far too many to list and much of his memorabilia will be available to view at an informal Memorial Gathering for Dalton to be held on Friday, October 24th at 1:30 pm at Springfield Funeral Home Family Centre, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. Dalton…..Yes the great story teller. I will miss you. I loved listening and sharing all Dalton’s stories from his buying Maggie her first fur coat to all his days engineering railways. We had lots of laughs. He was also an inspiration with learning how to swim and taking Pilates to stay healthy and fit. Dalton, may your next journey be filled with all the joy you would ever wish to have. Love your friend Jackie
A dear friend gone! It has been a tough journey for you, Dalton, over these past few months – hopefully, you can now rest at peace with everything. We will miss you for those Sunday night dinners, those Wed night Film Society movies, our coffee breaks and all those other little visits in between. We will also miss those countless stories you had to tell about your very interesting life with the railways, the RCAF and others. I will even miss you repeating those stories in case we didn’t get it the first time around! Good bye Dalton!

I met Dalton when he married my friend Rena and am so pleased that he made her last years so happy and fulfilled. My prayers and sympathy go out to his family and friends.
Dear Dalton, we’ve been family, friends, neighbours for the past 12 years having had many fantastic times with travel, food and laughter, right to the end. You were with us raising our children, and we’ll all miss you terribly. Rest in peace.

Dalton was always a good friend. We were fellow employees at the CPR in Toronto. Later, he became a valued employee when he joined me in my railway construction business in the 1970s.
As a visitor to our home, his usual gift to us was a loaf of his homemade bread or his wine. Dalton and Maggie looked after our daughter Mary in 1981 after she had a minor bicycle mishap in Vancouver.
He was a good friend to all of our family.

It is sad to hear that Dalton has departed. My thoughts and condolences go to those close to him.
To me he was an inspiration and mentor. I first knew him when I graduated from Civil Engineering at the U of T, almost 50 years ago, when I came to work for him with the CPR. With his job then as Division Engineer, he was dedicated, had a high energy level, demanded exceptional effort and quality of work, and expected this from those who worked for him and around him. He was a good professional engineer, and I will always remember the fine example and direction he set for me.
Of equal importance, he was a good friend. We could always share things that were good, difficult, sad, or happy, or whatever.
While he is gone, these thoughts will always be there.
