We Remember

JOHNSON, Mary Katherine

Mary Katherine Johnson passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the age of 90.  Survived by her loving family: son Bruce; two granddaughters Angela (Virgil) Cheever and Renee (Rod) Franzen; three great grandchildren Abigail, Chase and Dax; and her granddaughters mother Gwynne Johnson, all of Kelowna. Sadly predeceased by her husband Walter in 1993.  For Mary, family always came first.  She was very giving, loved animals especially her cat, enjoyed camping, knitting and sewing for her family and in later years doing jigsaw puzzles.  Gramma will be remembered for her love of peonies. She will be dearly missed and in our hearts forever.  No service by her request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kelowna SPCA, 3785 Casorso Road, Kelowna, BC V1W 4M7.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

    To Auntie Mary:
I will never forget the times at your house when we were small, always treats for us, the ping pong table in the basement and then the foosball table…we wore out our socks on the basement floor so you knitted us all slippers. The special pineapple dessert you made because you knew I liked it, you were the best! And camping at Pillar lake with you guys and Grandma and Grandpa and Judy and Rudy, it was all very special. And it all becomes more special the older I get. I will never forget you, or Walter. Now you guys can be together again, no matter how we wish you were still with us. I still have sweaters that you knit for me and my kids way back in the day. I’ll wear them and think of you. It was nice to see you just before Christmas with John and Michael, I’m glad we all got to see you one last time together. I love you Auntie Mary, I know you knew that, and I always will. Until I see you again, give Uncle Walter a hug for me and tell him I miss him too. David

    • Angela Cheever says:

      David,

I just want to thank-you so much for that beautiful message. She did love all you guys and I know how much she meant to you all as well. Wishing there was a funeral so we could all see each other but gramma didn’t want the burden on us or the attention on her.
Thank-you again for those beautiful words of kindness.
      Miss her so much,
      Angie

    • Renee Franzen says:

Thank you David for the great memories. We sure appreciate that you visited Gramma and I know she did too 🙂 She always let us know when you would pop by for a visit as she thoroughly loved seeing you.

Take care and thank you again!

      Renee

    Dear Angie, Renee & families,
We were saddened to hear of your grandmother, Mary’s passing.
She was a very special lady always so loving & caring.
Mary & Walter were our neighbours for 12 years and what great neighbours and people they both were!! We were truly blessed to have known them.
God saw that your grandmother, Mary’s work here on earth was done so he gently called her home.
Remember all the good times forget the rest.
Our love, thoughts & prayers are with you at this difficult time.
    Dave & Betty Mayer

  • Chrissy Mitschke says:

    Dear Angie, Renee and family,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing if your grandma. It seems the end of an era to me and although my nana passed away many years ago, the memories seem so recent. Mary was always the “young one” of the bunch and I have such fond memories of her. She had a great laugh and smile and I was always happy when I spent time at nana and bompas (Clara & Harold White) house on Ace Road, knowing that Angie and Renee would be just down the road visiting Mary!

Sincerest condolences from our family to yours ~ May your memories last forever.

    Regards,
    Christine Musgrave (nee Mitschke)

  • Ken Johnson says:

Dear Bruce,Gwynne, Angie, Renee….so sorry to hear about the sudden passing of my Aunt Mary….my wife Judy and I had planned to visit her in January in her new place….will miss the frequent meetings while getting groceries in Extra Foods….and talking over old times….she was one of my mother’s (Joyce Johnson) dearest friends and shared the same birthday…and they phoned quite often…….Mary was almost the last one of the Johnson family in her generation….Aunt Hazel (Stanley Johnson’s wife) was surprised to hear of her passing and sends her fond thoughts….Aunt Mary was your real “old fashioned” family person….always cooking and looking after her family and doing many dinners at her home. I am sure you will all miss her and all the wonderful activities that you did with her….

Those days of all the “Johnson’s” gathering on Aberdeen Street with Grandma and Grandma Johnson at their house will now be a passing memory that few of us will remember

    Our prayers are with you….

Ken and Judy Johnson and family
