We Remember

MURI, Gwen

Went home to be with the Lord on April 15, 2014 at the age of 78 years.  Survived by her loving husband of 58 years Jim, son Tim (Edith) Muri of Winfield, BC, daughters: Cindy (Dan) Bentley of Camrose, AB, Judy (Bill) Marsh of Red Deer, AB, Krista (Stephen) Vikse of Camrose, AB; 16 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, sisters Signe Thomassen of Oregon, Rita (Peder) Andreasen of Surrey, brother-in-law Charles Donovan of Maple Ridge.  Sadly predeceased by 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

Gwen was born Sylvia Gwendolyn Jacobsen on a farm just outside of Weldon, Sask. on May 8th, 1935.  She was the youngest of 12 children.  They moved to B.C. in 1941 with her brother, Rolf, driving them in a pickup with a small utility trailer holding all their belongings.  They settled in Vancouver where Gwen went to school at Sir Richard McBride Elementary.  They moved to Surrey onto a small acreage when she was 11 years old where she attended Simon Cunningham Elementary and graduated from Queen Elizabeth School in 1953.  Gwen met her future husband, Jim, at a Luther League convention being hosted by First Lutheran, Jim’s home church.  Jim was an usher.  When Gwen went up to give a report Jim asked the other usher, Arvid Thomassen, who she was, not realizing that Arvid was Gwen’s sister’s brother-in-law.  Jim convinced Arvid that they should drive her home that evening and the rest is history.

Gwen attended CLBI in Camrose, AB as did all her kids.  She and Jim raised their children in Coquitlam and moved to Winfield in 2001 and to Kelowna in 2010.

Gwen was an exceptional organist and pianist.  She played at her first wedding at the age of fifteen.  She was the organist for several churches for over sixty years.  Gwen was always very involved in the church, playing and singing in church choirs and other choral productions, as well as playing for many weddings and funerals.

Gwen was a wonderful and devoted wife and mother.  There were always fresh cookies or homemade cinnamon buns to come home to after school and she always made mealtimes a special gathering.

Gwen always had time for her family and other people and was always so kind.  Everyone loved her.  She had a special smile and a twinkle in her eye.  She will be greatly missed.

They have appreciated so much your visits to Olden, and remember with joy the last time you and Gwen were there. They have also appreciated all the Christmas cards Gwen has written.Personnaly I want to thank you for inviting me in 1976 to stay with your family for a school year.
