We Remember

PLETT, Doris (nee Harms)

Born to Peter and Neta Harms in Morris, Manitoba, on 10 September 1951.  She passed away at the Kelowna General Hospital on 16 September 2014 at the age of 63.

Doris was a middle child in a large family that lived in various towns in the Interlake area before settling in Southern Manitoba.  As a young teenager, her mother’s chronic illness required Doris to take over many of the household duties.  She often had to skip school in order to prepare meals for the rest of the family, learning at an early age the virtues of sacrifice, service, hospitality, and quiet perseverance that would permeate the rest of her life.

At age 18, Doris met Burt Plett, and on May 13, 1972, they were married and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba.  They later had two children, Kelly and Sheree, and Doris exemplified true selflessness while raising them.

Soon after expanding their family, Doris started working nights as a server.  This started a career in the restaurant industry that earned her a reputation as a hard and loyal worker, as well as many dear friends, co-workers and customers alike.

In 1993, Doris and the family moved to Eden Prairie, Minnesota, allowing her to touch a new circle of friends and customers with her selfless demeanor and helpful nature.  Whether in Manitoba or Minnesota, Doris was known for her inclusiveness, able to make deep friendships with anyone regardless of age, interests, or social group.  She was always game for anything—the sillier the better—leaving behind countless stories and inside jokes with her family and friends.

She enjoyed baking and gardening, and was always on the lookout for a bargain, but when her children started families of their own, Doris found her true passion as a doting grandmother.  Her grandchildren could always count on her to give them her undivided attention, and a willingness to play anything they wanted for hours on end.

In 2001, she was diagnosed with lymphoma, starting a long series of battles with health issues, eventually ending in liver failure.  Although she suffered greatly, she rarely complained, apologizing when she did.

Doris will be dearly missed by her husband Burt; and her children and grandchildren Kelly and Sheryl Plett (Owen and Joel) and Sheree and Jeremy Eisenhauer (Henry, Lucia and Anna).

Also left to mourn are her sisters and brothers Mary and Abe Barkman, Paul and Mildred Harms, Ed and Helen Harms, Betty and Glen Plett, and Henry and Lorna Harms; her parents-in-law Henry and Katherine Plett; her sisters- and brothers-in-law Clarice and Levi Dueck, Arlene Loewen, Vivian Plett, Valerie and Elmer Dueck, Elvira Plett, Shirley Plett, Bryan and Bev Plett, and Brad and Lisa Plett; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; as well as countless friends.

Doris was predeceased by her parents Peter and Neta Harms; brothers and sisters Esther Harms, Elma Harms, and Leonard Harms; and brothers-in-law Lloyd Loewen and Henry Plett.
