We Remember

STEFANIK, Norma Edith (nee Jonasson)

With dignity and grace, our beloved Norma passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 29, 2015 in Kelowna, British Columbia. Norma, Mom, Nana, Auntie Norma will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 61 years, Joseph Stefanik, her son Joe Stefanik (“Joey”) and wife Dawn Kuehn, grandchildren Drew, Devan and Dana Stefanik, nieces and nephews Dan Couture, Debbie Oldershaw, Renee Strong, Jacqueline Brisdon, David Couture, and Jonna and Billy Vasser, Brian Keilback, Janet Fraser, Brenda Klayh, Lori, Michael and Trevor Jonasson, sisters-in-law, Merie Vassar and Jean Jonasson.

Norma was predeceased by her father, Baldur Jonasson, and mother, Olga Anderson (nee Olson), second husband Arnie Anderson, sisters Grace Jonasson, Gwen Couture, Polly Keilback, brother Leon Jonasson, father-in-law William Stefanik and mother-in law Mary Stefanik, brothers-in-law Ray Couture, Jack Keilback and Bill Vassar.

Norma was born on October 27, 1930 in Gimli, Manitoba. She moved to Winnipeg with her sister Grace when she was 17 years old. Norma attended Success Business College and worked at Manitoba Medical Services where she met Joseph Stefanik. On June 6, 1953, Norma and Joseph were married at the First Lutheran Church on Victor Street in Winnipeg. Norma and Joseph had one child, Joe, born in 1957, and purchased their family home in Windsor Park in 1958. Norma and Joseph and their friends and family spent many wonderful summers together at their cabin at Grand Beach. Norma worked at Eaton’s in the Customer Service Department for many years. Norma later worked at Little People’s Daycare where she obtained her Daycare Worker’s Certification. Norma’s love for children inspired her to continue working at the daycare until her retirement in 1989, when Norma and Joseph moved to Kelowna, British Columbia and where they spent many more wonderful years together in the beautiful Okanagan.

Norma spent the last 7 years of her life at Sun Pointe Village living with dementia and where Joseph visited her and cared for her every day. The disease could not steal away Norma’s sweet, gentle spirit, which she generously shared with Joseph and all of the loving and caring staff at Sun Pointe Village.

A Celebration of Norma’s Life will take place on February 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Springfield Funeral Home, located at 2020 Springfield Road in Kelowna, with a viewing for family and friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of British Columbia.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”
