We Remember

SCHAFFRICK, Amelia

Amelia Schaffrick (née Mentz) passed away on April 20, 2015 at Central Okanagan Hospice House after a brief battle with cancer.

Amelia (Oma/Malchen/Millie) was born on July 13, 1934 in Kromnow, Poland. She was the youngest child of Susanne and Wilhelm Mentz. She had five brothers and one sister. Her childhood was interrupted by World War II. She survived many difficulties until she immigrated from Germany to Canada in 1952. Her older brother, Helmut, introduced her to the love of her life, Reinhard Schaffrick. They were married on June 5, 1954 in Edmonton, Alberta. For the first several years of their married life, they traveled around western Canada, following Reinhard’s work in the oil patch, living in a trailer and having a family – three daughters, Lili, Ingrid and Karen. In 1962, they settled in Edmonton to be close to family and friends. When Reinhard’s career required relocating to Drummondville, Quebec and Calgary, Alberta, Millie packed up the house and daughters to support him. Upon Reinhard’s retirement in 1986, they moved to Kelowna to enjoy the climate and beauty of the area. They enjoyed traveling to visit their daughters in the States and made dozens of trips to Mexico. Amelia loved walking on the beach, gardening and being a grandmother.

The focus of her life was her husband and her family. She was a wonderful wife and an amazing mother and grandmother – Oma – not only to her daughters and grandchildren, but to their friends and family. She will be remembered for her sassy attitude, sense of humor and quick wit.

Amelia will be missed by her husband of sixty years, Reinhard, her daughters: Lili (Dennis) Taylor, Ingrid (Dennis) Howden and Karen (Cliff) Knitter, her grandchildren: Judson, Susanne, Carla, Chris (Lia Sousa), Jonathan and Julia, her great-grandson, Noah and her brother, Wilhelm Mentz.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 27 at 10:30 am at Christ Lutheran Church, 2091 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, BC.  A special thank you to Dr. Carver for her kind and outstanding care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation.
