We Remember

GOULD, Betty Jane

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our Mom, Betty, on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in Kelowna, BC at the age of 89.

She was the daughter of Fred and Ruby Thibedeau of Esponola, Ontario.  She is survived by her two daughters Jaye Read of Kelowna, Lesley Powell (Ken) of Vancouver and son Eddie Gould (Shelby) of Toronto and two grandsons Jared Powell and Lincoln Powell (Phalyn) of Vancouver and sister Marilyn Smith of Florida.  Betty is predeceased by her husband Eddie, son-in-law Peter Read, grandson Kenny Powell, brother Roy and sisters Neressa Cameron and Carol Hooey.

Betty ventured to Winnipeg to begin her career and that is where she met the love of her life, Eddie, who was her boss.

Betty loved music, riding and playing hockey for the Pimm Hill Bullets and later figure skating at the Winnipeg Winter Club.  She also took up golf while dating Dad and they enjoyed playing for many years at Niakwa and St. Charles Country Club.

When her children were older she became an enthusiastic trader in the stock market and made many friends in the Tuxedo Investment Club.  She loved going to Vegas and to say she enjoyed going to the casino was an understatement.  She loved cooking for her family and friends and we all shared fantastic meals that she would spend hours preparing.

Mom and Dad enjoyed many summers at their cottage at Falcon Lake, Manitoba and winters in Fountain Hills, Arizona.  The times spent at these homes gave our family very fond memories.

They travelled the world and had some great adventures.  Betty and Eddie were a great team for 65 years; Betty’s love of life will be missed by all who knew her.

Many thanks to the caring staff at Sutherland Hills Rest Home and Dr. Peter Cosmann.  A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 15th at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kelowna General Hospital Foundation-Cardiac Fund, 2268 Pandosy Street, Kelowna, BC V1Y 1T2.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

My Aunt Betty is singing with the Angels now in that she was truely an angel on this Earth!

I met her in the late 1940’s when my Uncle Eddie married her and brought her to our Los Angeles area home on their Winter Holidays. She sang and danced to the Norte Dame fight song while my brother Roddy played it on his accordion. She and my Uncle visited for many winters into the mid 1950’s.

When she and Uncle Eddie built Falcon Lake my mom, aunt Thora and I visited there and then I spent 3 summers at the ‘Lake’ with the children during the weeks and my Uncle, and their guests on weekends…..such glorious days for a southern California teenager….dances at West Hawk Lake included!

She and my Uncle visited me and my young family in Boulder, Colorado, while Graduate School was our life.

As California and Arizona continued to beckon my Aunt and Uncle in the Winter, we had many wonderful visits.

Eventually my husband and 3 sons found our way back to Falcon and Brereton Lakes
in 1977…… and then My Aunt and Uncle visited my family and my Mom, Eddie’s sister Anna, at our Lake Arrowhead home in southern California.. once a Lake girl, always a Lake girl for sure!

Aunt Betty provided me with wonderful counsel my entire life, shared her love and wisdom with my sons, as did my Uncle Eddie….one of my sons, Paul, visited them, with his wife and son in them Kalowna.

My aunt was loving and generous, gracious always……

My mother, Anna Gould Elder, said many times that Betty was a wonderful complement to my Uncle Eddie and his wonderfully, successful business career in the Winnipeg Grain Exchange.

    her grateful and loving niece,

    ‘Punky’

  • Ron Stephens says:

    Dear Jaye Lesley and Eddie:

How blest you are to have wonderful parents and all the beautiful memories because all of you were granted long lives together. I too have good memories because our families lived next door to each other at Falcon. Both Betty, big Eddie were always willing to help and our family certainly experienced the Gould generosity. Our mothers became good friends as they visited back and forth between the two cabins on the weekends. Gord and I learned to first surfboard and eventully water ski behind your boat. Then after an afternoon on the water we kids would head up to the cabin where our Mum’s had prepared a barbeque. Other times you would invite us for a sauna and then it was tradition to jump into the cold lake. For me it was an excellent cure for the ocasional hangover purchased the night before at Westhawk or some party. I don’t know if you remember but big Eddie got me my first full time job as office boy at McCabe Grain. It was the shortest interview in my whole life. Your parents had a large influence on my life. Those were great days growing up at Falcon. The Stephens family were fortunate to have you as neighbours. I often think back to those days when life was easy and worries were few. So Eddie, Lesley and Jaye my wish for you is that the Lord bless you and keep you and the Lord make His face shine upon you til we are all together again in His kingdom.

  • GORD STEPHENS says:

    Dear Jaye, Lesley & Eddie
