We Remember
HORNER, Fred Rex Alfred
November 9, 1940 — November 25, 2024
It is with deep love and great sadness that we announce the loss of Fred Horner, who passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, at the age of 84, surrounded by his family who loved him dearly.
Left to hold him dear to their hearts are those he loved most, including his loving wife of 61 years, Elsie; children Rich (Karen) and Rhonda (Steve); grandchildren Michael (Gabby), Davis (Caroline), Emily (Garrett), and Jacob; great-granddaughter Evangeline; and siblings Jim (Marie) and Pearl.
Fred was born on November 9, 1940, in Saskatchewan to Ruby and Alfred Horner, beginning a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. While working at the same bank in Calgary, AB, he met the love of his life, Elsie, and the two married shortly after, building a beautiful life together. In 1974, Fred and Elsie moved their young family to Vernon, BC, where they established deep roots and lasting friendships. Fred worked at Riverside Forest Products for three decades until his well-earned retirement. An avid sports enthusiast, Fred enjoyed golf, softball, and volleyball, but his greatest passion was Canadian football—his pride in the sport and his country evident in his steadfast refusal to watch American football. Fred’s adventurous spirit led him to travel the world, with memorable trips to Bali, Thailand, Australia, and Europe, as well as enjoying casino visits down south.
Known for his smile and witty sense of humour, Fred’s personality even shone through in his text messages, often peppered with emojis that brought smiles to his loved ones. A devoted family man, Fred adored his grandchildren and was overjoyed to become a great-grandpa this past summer. His family was his everything, and his love for them was above all else. Fred made an everlasting impact on all who knew him and will be deeply missed.
“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore, that I can do, or kindness that I can show any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” Etienne de Grellet
Family and friends will each honour and remember Fred in their own way. No formal service will be held.
