Rusty as I have know him Elementary School passes through my mind even well before his passing notice. Rusty and I were not always close but we crossed paths during our years at Mount Royal Elementary School. Rusty was thought of by many as the Scary Bully at school but we became close friends after a confrontational “Marbles Game” in the playground next to school. After our minor battle Rusty and I would chum together and i assisted him with Journal paper route, from sorting papers at the Journal Distribution “Green Shack” we would deliver the papers with me even allowed to Tag along on “Collection Day”. Like Rusty I too enjoyed a fruitful life as a Plumber, Gas-fitter, Steamfitter. I will always remember Rusty with fondness having grown up in the same Highlands neighborhood. Peeling back the perceived layer of intimidation I grew to see him as a kind and hard playing/working gentleman.
I am shocked to read of the passing of Russel in the Edmonton Journal. We grew up together on 52 St, hanging around with his brothers Rick and Greg as well. In 1974, I tutored him in a physics course to qualify for his plumbing apprenticeship. He went on to gaining his journeyman status and in 1981 did some plumbing work in my future wife’s home. Sweet memories of a friend I haven’t seen since but an happy to have befriended.
Russ we will Miss You…we will miss our fish & chip dinners..your sarcastic sense of humour and your practical jokes…Rest in Peace our friend.
Linda and family, I am shocked and saddened to hear of Rusty’s passing. A lot of time has passed since those years at the apartment on 34 Street. He was a one of a kind guy – always the same when I would run into him. I know he will be missed.
